Sierra Madre Closed Detour?
Has anyone found a good route to replace Sierra Madre between Grand and San Gabriel Cyn in Glendora? I took Foothill and didn't care for that much. My friend stayed on SM and ended up in the new housing development for a while but had to walk 1/4 mile on dirt. I guess the road is gone in places.

A friend of mine said he found a detour through the new houses. I didn't ask if there was any dirt but he did mentioned he rode the whole way. We had to unclip the week before and walk through a big hole. I have been using Foothill/Alosta.

Update on Sierra Madre detour through Azusa. The city of Azusa will be loaning the money to the builders to complete Sierra Madre road but it will be awhile. In the meantime, the homes in that area won't be finished anytime soon. There is a route through the new homes that will bypass that section of roadway that is still under construction.
Update on the development.

Directions:
If you ride from Encanto Park in Duarte
Turn Right on Dalton Ave
Left on 13th (13th will curve right and become Pasadena(?))
Left on 9th st
Left on Azusa Veterans (This will take you directly through the new unfinished housing development)
Right on Sierra Madre

Bob, we went through there yesterday and took the same route we did the last time I was with you. It is almost finished and they were rolling out the last section. We had to walk in the dirt for maybe 100 yards, and that was only because the asphalt was hot. I think it will be done this week.
How was your ride? Did you go to the snow?

SIERRA MADRE IS NOW OPEN! You can now ride from Encanto Park to the base of Glendora Mountain Road once again.
I went through there on Saturday and there is a nice new paved section where the once narrow rolling hills section was located. They have installed two European Style roundabouts which will force automobile traffic to be more attentive and will discourage the 50+mph drivers that once frequented the old road.

We rode through that new paved section last weekend and loved it! Much better and highly recommended way of bypassing the harrowing section of Foothill through Asuza. We'll definitely do it again... even with cars, I bet it will be better than Foothill.

I ride through there to work from Claremont every Tues and Fri. I'm glad the section is open again, but it's hardly bike friendly or much safer than the short stretch of Foothill I used to have to ride on. The lane is narrow with no bike lane and almost no shoulder and you cannot take the roundabouts at pace. If you're behind a slow car in the roundabouts (and they all slow) there is no room to go around safely. I get passed too closely by clearly upset drivers almost every time I ride on the section because there is not adequate room for a bike and a car in the lane.

It's been open for a few weeks now. Montrose is going thru it. The roundabouts makes me feel like I'm in the Tour, but the riders who can't make the left and right turn quick is not making me comfortable. I might have to pull a McEwen just jump over and ride through the roundabout
