Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've ridden the Makuri 40. I gotta say, I'm not in love with the Makuri Islands. To me, they're kind of Meh. No real climbs, just some rollers. I'll stick with Watopia, with occasional forays into London for the Leith/Keith and Box/Fox hills, which are bout my speed - a couple miles, some steep pitches, but nothing like AdZ or Ventoux.

Today I learned that a guy who used to ride with our club has passed from cancer at 59. He held 50 Guinness world records from martial arts to breaking things with his hands and all kinds of weird stuff. One time he was riding with some other club members when a drunk in a car started harassing them. Drunk got out of his car and started trying to hit the cyclists with a cane. This guy took the cane away and pinned the drunk until the cops came.

We weren't friends but I remember him as friendly and funny and I was sad to hear he is gone.

I like Makuri! I think it's the most visually beautiful map, especially Urukazi. They do lack in climbing for sure, if that's your thing. Hopefully they release the Mt Fuji expansion soon!

I guess the graphics are no higher than secondary for me. It's the nature of the road, the ups and downs. New York is absolutely the worst! The little bumps that break your flow - do you stand up for them? Or drop to a smaller gear for 5 seconds? Or just try to power over them? Makuri's not that bad, but there are a lot of stretches with that sort of thing. London is basically flat with a couple sections that go up (or down, depending), but then if you go to Surrey you get hills that are hills, with steadier gradients. The new Southern Coast in Watopia is not too bad, but I feel like it needs a real climb. I guess I'm picky - the outdoor riding here is such a nice mix of ups and downs of pretty good lengths, so I can find the gear and the rhythm for each pretty easily.

Nice. I would have guessed that was Dan Press in the picture because of the black car that's number 25, but that was a different class. I did hear Jim Robinson, and he drove number 78 Monza, which was unusual, and also Calczynski, which is hard to forget. We ran Open Comp, which was run what ya brung... We had a Dennis Fischer 388 ci, and others ran small blocks that were in the 426 ci range, which was big in that time.

No midweek ride for me this week for two reasons:

1. I got drafted to work today as a coworker is out due to family medical emergency
2. Ride canceled anyway due to frozen runoff from yesterday's snowstorm

It it pretty inconsistent. In NY - I never ride there unless in a race event so I just power over them in the saddle/big ring. And I guess Makuri is pretty inconsistent overall, lots of roller-y terrain. Neokyo has some flat routes you can get into a rhythm on, but I feel like I'm gonna have a seizure after riding there for too long lol. I much prefer the natural scenery in Yumezi and Urukazi.

You have me thinking about the way that I use Zwift more broadly, since I don't seem to think about terrain so much. Early on, I would do solo endurance rides covering most of the routes, but now that I've done most of them, I rarely, rarely do that. I have several modes when riding Zwift:

1) 45 - 60 min Active Recovery or Endurance paced spin
2) Racing/Events
3) Endurance rides 3-6 hours (rarely over 4)
4) Solo intervals

For 1), I just go onto Tempus and watch something on Youtube. For 2) and 3), I try to spend most of it in groups, and that tends to smooth terrain out a bit compared to riding solo. So 4) is the only "mode" where the terrain matters, esp since I enjoy riding at 100% trainer difficulty for a realistic feel. For this one, I certainly prefer longer and more consistent gradients (whether uphill or flat) to make it eaier to apply power targets. I do these in Watopia exclusively.

During the hiatus we took in a foster dog for 4 days then he found his forever home. Mrs. RNS cried when she took him back and after she returned home.
he was a cute 10 pound 6 month old puppy. "Jameson"

That would be the tough part of fostering.

It's nice you are doing that. Dogs deserve good.

Roscoe tolerated Jameson but really he mostly ignored him. We are mulling over other foster options. The biggest concern is Roscoe not tangling with the foster due to territorial disputes.

Always. We have been very lucky in that regard. Rebecca-Bee thought she was going to be queen **** and mess with Lotus, and neither one of them took Dad into account... Georgia-Mae has always been chill, and I'm sure she was like the little kid laughing behind the door at her two sisters getting in trouble.

It hasn't happened again.

We've had so many different kinds of interactions among our different generations of dogs, from clearly dominant to frankly not caring about heirarchy or dominance. Such different personalities!

I heard that the stainless steel in the Cybertruck is structural, whereas in the Delorean it was essentially cladding over a fiberglass shell (am I right?), and that is has no crumple zones, so it is more likely to injure passengers in a crash since it's not designed to absorb the energy.

Mind you, that could be ********.
