This week's purchase of "Baleaf Men's Thermal Cycling Tights Size XL" turned out to be a good choice despite the fact that they're really running tights. Worn over a pair of their (discontinued) chamois pad cycling tights in a large they worked out just about right. Worried a bit at the start I might almost be too warm, but it was a windy day on the Hudson River Greenway so after dropping down to just two long sleeve summer weight tops they struck the right balance. And looking forward to trying them over chamois shorts when it's not quite so cold.

Going up a size was definitely the right call for use as a second layer.

Reviews that say they are too low in the back have a point, but seemed tolerable for my fairly upright riding position, might not work as well in the drops on a road bike.

I suppose any types of layers are OK. Just keep adding them until you're not cold.

For commuting, I've been wearing generic exercise tights under a pair of trousers.

Someone here once recommended some overpants, which I've used only once or twice. They're too damned warm. I don't ride when it's under 20ºF.
