Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, me too, actually.

I have a camping hammock I need to start practicing with. I plan to go north during the hottest part of the summer; otherwise I'll be too cold.

In other news, we missed the vaccination cutoff on friday, by about six people and will try again tomorrow morning.

To me, camping always sounds like more fun than it actually turns out to be. "Sleep under the stars! Enjoy the quiet of the wild!" Yeah, and wake up in the middle of the night having to pee, in the freezing cold, while what sounds like a bear but is actually a squirrel rummages through the leaves all around your tent. Wake up to no coffee, like that time Mrs. GeneJockey and I went camping with her class, back when she was a teacher - it was late May in NorCal, so nobody expected it to rain, and so nobody closed up the camp stoves overnight.

I loved having the camper. We spent Y2K at Jalama Beach and it rained a bit and was windy at night. We were comfortable while the people in tents were not.
We had the 3 way fridge with freezer. You can cook in there in any weather, you can play cards or board games if it rains.

LSS and I used to do a lot of backpacking before her knees went bum. We loved the White Mountains when it was too cold for the crowds. Now we cruise, which is pretty plush, aside from the occasional life-threatening emergency.

Instant coffee for the win. At least you're guaranteed some caffeine.
And I'd like to do a little 8 or 9 day tour. Normally I would do warm showers, but it feels too invasive under the circumstances.

My best friend and I traveled from norcal to the east coast, and back, across Canada, in one of those, in the mid seventies. A great way to travel. He had the truck and I bought the camper.

I don't have any interesting stories about camping, but I could talk at length about this.

I have a Crewsaver ergo-something I got for ocean racing. I really like it and I use it on our boat when it gets sporty. However, I don’t believe it’s USCG approved.

Asking for a friend. Their village was given Sinovac, and they are not confident in it. They got it last week. On May 15, they fly to the USA and want to get Moderna a few days later. They already have an appointment. Should they get the second Sinovac before leaving, or can they jump over to Moderna five weeks after the first Sinovac?

Tough question and believe whatever datlas says, but I’d just go and get both Moderna shots.

Even trying to nap didn't work. Frakkin' Greyhound - sleeps all day, but as soon as I lie down, he wants fed.

One of my desert riding friends bought an old wooden camper and we slept in it a couple times. It didn't have any plumbing, a stove, or any other amenities but it had 2 big beds and was a good nights sleep out of the weather and off of the ground.

The second one I had was an older Lance I bought for $800. I had a 7'x7' bed to which I added extra foam padding. I made a 2 bike rack for it and the ex and I did some charity centuries with it. Much better than a motel.

I've had good luck with solar showers, used them at Lake Tahoe. Kinda mandatory after mountain biking in the woods and sleeping in the same bed as the wife. You can even shower in swim trunks if there is no privacy. We camped at Fallen Leaf Lake and swam n the cold water and still took a solar shower.

We carry a bunch of Type IIIs, but are never more than a mile or two from shore. I like an inflatable when it gets sporty since my wife will claim it was difficult to turn around and get me. Also for singlehanded. The Type IIIs are hot I the summer, and are mostly used when we go for a swim (nobody gets in the water without one).
