Quick questionfrom a noob

Are the times for each leg based on when you enter the transition areas or when you leave?

Thanks,

Cliff

The races I have done have T1 & T2 lumped in with your bike time. So there will be a timing mat right as you exit the swim. All the time you take in transition + bike time + transition to run will be together. There will be another timing mat as you exit transition for your run.

That being said - I believe longer races actually give you your transition times, so I guess it depends on the race.

Yea, this will depend on the race. Most longer races and/or races with a large number of participants record transition times separately. But if you are getting ready to do your first tri don't worry about them too much. Know what you you need to do, practice a little, but they require experience to get through them fast.

Why is the swim so short? A "standard" sprint is 750m/20km/5km.

It seems that just about every race is different...and they can vary from year to year. One race that I do every year keeps switching things up. In 2004 your swim time was recorded when you left T1 (not T1 time), the next year, they had a timing mat when you exited the swim, this year the mat was at the entrance to T1 (after a 300m run/walk to the top of a 150 ft. high hill).

Yea, it depends on what company they hired to do the timing (or if they're just simply having someone writing down numbers and times on a clipboard).

Ditto what others said about races varying. Also, I wear my watch and hit the lap button at the end of each leg and beginning / end of each transition so that I have an unofficial (and immediate) idea of my times.

Ditto on varies race to race. Ideally T1 and T2 are their own separate times. Not lumped in with anything else.

Which leg do you wear the timing chip on?
