Sturmey Archer SA hub making crunching noise and occasional skip.
I have a Raleigh Sprite witb a 1974 AW hub. The cog is 24T. The hub is correctly adjusted with just the slightest play. Shifter is clean and precise. Neutral is right between 2 and 3. The only thing ive changed lately is use synth 5-40 oil which makes the hub completely silent and it doesnt leak out.
So a couple of times a day ill get a crunch when i shift to 1 or 3 and occasionally when going to 3 ill get a big skip. Half a pedal revolution skipand a bit of a surprise.
So tell me i have to take the hub apart because ive been looking for an excuse to do so for years.

AW's do have that in between that the pedals meet no resistance if not Quite into 2nd..
You need To get the cable tension Right. You know how the indicator chain shoulder is supposed to line up with the end of the axle ?
that is why that hole runs across the funnel nut the shift chain bends over the end Of ... to see that adjustment indication.
Just as the company changed hands The NIG redesign happened, in England
and now the new Sun Race-Sturmey-Archer are only made in NIG
I greased the axle Bearings on my 94 AW3 , it keeps the Gear lube oil in too.
I squirt Phil tenacious oil, into my BSR hub.
