Bad Lag

I went for a ride today along the South Bay Bike Path. "My" portion of it runs from Torrance Beach, Redondo Beach Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, Playa del Rey and Marina del Rey.

The bike path was JAMMED with cyclists, pedestrians, runners, strollers, skateboarders. It is a sunny, warm day here with a gentle on-shore breeze blowing. Honestly, it was PERFECT, and to top it all off, it's Fathers' Day. Happy Fathers' Day, guys.

Someday, maybe, I will take some photos and post them. I have ridden bikes almost my whole life and have almost no photos to show for it. I was even into photography for a while but still have none.

Cleaning out some stuff I found a set of bar's I had completely forgotten about turns out while not high end they gave my MT-200 the littler bit of room I needed to make the bike comfortable. Put them on the bike with some strait handles and got the fit just right. So I went up to Thompson Park and did a bit of trail riding. With the fit sorted out I'm surprised how nice this bike rides mid level hard frame but rides smother on trails than some top end suspension bikes I have road.

Curiously, the driver passed me with lots of room and quite courteously. It was the passenger who felt the need to add a new species for me to tick!

I drove to the Crystal Mountain Ski resort on Monday and began my ride from the parking lot of the Alpine Inn. Later in the afternoon the Inn would provide a cold beer as an incentive when I do the final 1500 foot climb to finish the ride.

It's snow free up to Cayuse Pass and starting to warm up so I remove my windbreaker. As I rise in elevation twords Chinook Pass snow is still holding on creating little micro climates of cool moist air as you pass through shady spots.

The snowpack is still fairly deep up higher. Although you can’t see them in this picture, these slopes were filled with tracks from skiers laying down the last lines of the season in the soft corn snow.

Chinook Pass is at the crest of the Cascades - the snow quickly disappears after this point due to the drier climate and the open exposure of the slope to the sun. I toyed around with the idea of going down to Natches and looping back via Highway 12 but the allure of staying inside the the park and the reality that I was riding alone held me back. That ride is best done with companions.

I turn off at the White River entrance and ride twords Sunrise Road anticipating the great climb up to Sunrise. You can imagine my disappointment 10 miles later when I saw this:

The road had been open to bikers when I checked the website on Sunday.

Oh well, I just took the road that leads to the White River Campground which had it’s own appeal.

Climbing the last 6 miles in the heat of the day made me daydream about having that cold beer at the Alpine Inn when I finished the ride.

zukahn1 I like the bike. Those late 80’s and early 90’s MTB were tough as nails but still had an elegant look about them.

northbend you are doing some serious riding these days, keep the pics coming! Also good to see Scott made it up to ride with you. I’m a little jealous of the the snow lined roads. Humidity has kicked in in the east coast, so unless one gets an early start (hard for me) , there will be some suffering.

First time on the SLT in a while - found where northern Illinois hides a few of it's hills. Nothing too wild but 50ft / mile on this ride was about twice what I get on some of my regular routes.

We've been having really dramatic skies this week, and overall the weather has been wonderful for afternoon rides.

Took a very nice two hour afternoon ride up to Thompson Park and a good part of the Hack trail on the MT-200. The more I ride this bike it seems the more I like it took the cheapo tire liners out somehow I missed this when rebuilt the bike and it improved the already great ride.

I'm off furlough and back at work now, so no rides out this week. So why not take my time, and take a few photos on the commute into work on Friday?

There's a few differences between now and pre-lockdown that have been apparent this week, which have been interesting to see, and show that even with the easing of restrictions over recent weeks we're still a long way from returning to normal.

I took the same route as usual on my commute, leaving home I join the A370, the main road south out of Weston-super-Mare for a mile, before turning off and continuing on a lane towards Brean, then joining the Brean cycleway, an off road route with a mix of tracks and gravel trails.



In the early morning sun this is a very good place to ride a bike - over a mile of traffic free trail, with views across to Brean Down.



The cycleway rejoins the road just outside of Brean by a large caravan park. A lot of families from the Midlands rent a pitch on the site for the whole season, and bring their caravans down as soon as the park opens. So this year rather than the usual bustle of people arriving for a weekend there's the rather sad sight of a lot of empty unused caravans across the park, with the gates still locked.



From the caravan park it's a choice of a MUP or the road into Brean; I'll usually take the road as traffic is normally light along there in the morning and the path is used by quite a few people walking their dogs.

Brean is usually busy - it's a popular tourist centre with caravan parks, bars, restaurants, amusement arcades, etc., and on a morning in the summertime I'd normally see people out, setting up tables, cleaning, putting out signs, taking in deliveries. None of that in the mornings this week - most of the attractions are locked and shuttered, and apart from a few locals walking their dogs there's no one on the street. A bit of a desolate sight.



From Brean I follow the road through Berrow and into Burnham-on-Sea, riding along the sea front. Again the contrast between a normal summer morning and the current situation is very stark. Burnham is a tourist resort like Brean, and usually there'd be all the usual morning activity outside the shops and restaurants, camper vans parked up all along the road by the sea front, lots of people from the caravan sites and holiday parks out walking along the front. Today it was just me, an old man, and his dog.



You can see the Hinkley Point site from Burnham sea wall - work has carried on there throughout the Corona virus outbreak, although there have been a number of cases amongst the workforce.



At the end of the sea front I take another cycleway along the estuary of the River Brue and through a park into Highbridge - another couple of miles of off road gravel trail. Again, it's noticeable how few people are out and about, apart from a few dog walkers and cycle commuters.



At Highbridge I'm back onto another main road, the A38, heading towards Bridgwater. While motor traffic volume is lower than normal the speeds are definitely higher, and it's a relief to be able to turn off after a couple of miles in West Huntspill and ride the rest of the way to work on quiet country lanes, crossing the River Huntspill just a few miles before getting into work in time to get a coffee and sit outside in the sun before starting.

Not very scenic, but I checked out the progress on construction of the Greenway extension near me. Took the Cannonale today. The dirt "road" I was on looked like just access for machinery; the plank section runs parallel to it and to a River. I have to admit, I feel like I get my tax-dollars worth out of my local Greenways here.

More than a light drizzle today in Socal on a 48 mile ride with a smaill group of riders. I kept my distance more than 6ft because majority of them didn't have masks.

The Gios has become one of my top 3 rides i own ever since going from 14-24 to 13-26 freewheel. Averaged 24mph.

Also logged in the first miles on my new cateye padrone that was a bday gift from my wife.
