Used Tires

Do you consider a tire used if it's been mounted on a rim (thus marking the sidewalls/beads in the process) but not actually ridden on? Asking for a friend

Depends on if I was buying from a shop at full proice or "private" or if I was selling it.
If I was selling I'd say, mounted never ridden.

If the tire had been out of the box (or package) and my greasy hands had wrapped it around a rim, I'd feel obligated to put a big asterisk next to New. I'd probably just say it was mounted once, but it's difficult to simply call it New.

How many shoes do you try on before you buy them?

Come now, that's not the same. Let's stick to tires as that's what we're discussing

Interesting. If selling, I'd do the same. I'll add that I'd expect both the shop and a private party to also give me all the information so that I can make an informed choice.

I have purchased several glued but never ridden tires at the Madison swap. Don't forget tubulars.

They look the same to me. Whenever one of my bikes needs new tires the phrase that goes through my mind is "Baby needs new shoes."

Personally I would probably advertise them, "mounted but never ridden" but I wouldn't get too pushed out of shape if someone else described them as "new." After all, the first thing I'm going to do with them is mount them on a rim.

It's just a bit experienced. Let's call it matured. Not even shopworn. Fe-fe-fe-fetch a cloth and it'll be right as rain.

I think they should be disclosed as takeoffs that have not been ridden. As a buyer, I’d view them as new tires.

Honesty prevails! I have bought real nice tires at decent prices from folks and never had a problem. I have had take offs given to me from guys that buy a high end bike and want something different than what comes with the bike. If I had used tires that were worthy of passing on I would give them to the co op.
