What do you put into your oatmeal?
I've grown up having the occasional bowl of microwaved oatmeal, and since I'm getting into cycling I figured I should learn to make some good quality oatmeal on the stove. It turned out great and I love it! Just want a few more ideas about what I could put in it. I always put a bit of cinnamon, and about a tablespoon of brown sugar to sweeten it up a little bit. I like chopping up a banana (I've heard you can add it early and let it melt in, but I haven't tried this) and recently tried raisans which were good as well. Some almonds might be worth a shot. Any good oatmeal cooks out there?

Eggs, cheese, a little milk, chopped chives, a little paprika ... and I leave the oatmeal out.
Well, actually I do sometimes eat oatmeal, but you have it covered. I definitely recommend sliced almonds, and I use honey or maple syrup instead of brown sugar ... and No water. Instant oatmeal is supposed to be cooked in milk. On the stove you have to be a little more careful not to scorch the milk.
A healthy dollop of peanut butter adds an interesting occasional variation.

Genetics have failed me
Broken chain links, bits of carbon fibre and an 11 speed cog to spice it up.

I blend rolled oats in a smoothie ( uncooked, but washed , and rinsed to get all that white stuff off it ) with carrots, cucumber, assorted lettuces, capsicum, tomato, apple, alfalfa, celery, avocado, apple, blueberry, beet , coconut water. and the key ingredient is almonds, 2 handfuls, to give it a nutty flavour

I like steel cut oats.
If I have the time to cook them in the morning before I eat them, I like them with vanilla, a dash of agave, and fresh blueberries.
If I have to cook them ahead of time, I do agave, cinnamon, and raisins.

What led you to that conclusion? I grew up eating oat meal. I never eat it now. Even when I rode across the country carrying my own gear I didn't eat oat meal--or bananas.

Steel cut oats here, too, I like to add some apple, a bit of cinnamon, some dark brown sugar (very little necessary,) and chopped walnuts. Its purely personal taste for me now, but I started on oatmeal at my doctor's recommendation following my 3rd kidney failure. Got to be a regular breakfast, now its a nice habit. I used it while I was losing 110 lbs, but doubt that it had any big part in the weight loss, mainly it is a healthy food, that aids in cholesterol control (according to some nutritional studies, YMMV.)

I blend mine with cottage cheese, kale and/or spinach, a banana, and some cinnamon and ginger. Also add a dash of cranberry juice (the real stuff, not the sugary junk). During blueberry season I might add some fresh from the bushes outside. And sometimes I throw in some walnuts or almonds for some natural butters.

No microwaved oatmeal for me. And the only things I put in it are a few raisins, almond milk, a little sugar and a spoon.

I'll usually add honey, because we have lots of it from the bees, but I like maple syrup, cinnamon, and toasted almonds, too. Any fruit is good. Sometimes, though, I add a tiny bit of salt and a spoonful of butter. It doesn't always have to be sweet.

What do you put into your oatmeal?
Cook it in water with a pinch of salt, then add a banana, apple juice, a dash of olive oil, and a handful of trail mix.
My standard breakfast on tour
Which of you guys is it that mixes instant coffee powder in with your oatmeal?

Steel cut.
Buttermilk (or 50/50 grk yogert and milk), brown sugar, maple syrup, dash of salt.
For some reason I got in the habit of toast with orange marmalade on the side and now seldom have one w/o the other.
Trail mix! Good idea, I'll try that.

Cook them at night. Get water up to boil, add steel cut oats. Bring to boil and shut off, cover and leave over night. Just need to cook for 10 minutes or so in the am. Op's question, raisins, dried apples and milk.

I like to add some crunch to keep the texture from being boring.
I like any nuts. I like fresh tart apples (granny smith or pink lady are great). I love dried tart cherries as well.
I always add a dash of salt. Usually use some milk instead of water. One coffee shop nearby does jam and cream, it is quite yummy.
I like spices: pumpkin pie, 5 spice (yup the Chinese/Vietnamese one), cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom, and mace are all good choices. I also have vanilla salt that is great!

I love oatmeal, and like it best with ground beef ----- ala, meatloaf, with onion, egg, garlic, salt, pepper, a smidgen of mustard, and some catsup dehydrated on top.

I use the "quick oats" version. I'll throw it in a bowl and fill it with hot water at the office coffee machine. Stir it for about a minute and it's ready to eat.
My standard recipe is:
My standard recipe is:
- 1/2 cup of oats
- 1 tbsp natural peanut butter
- 1 tbsp honey
- pinch of salt

I mix my rolled oats with olive oil, honey, flax seed, nuts, raisins and a little cinnamon and nutmeg. Spread it on a pan, bake it and call it granola. Breakfast is 2/3s of a cup with (say) an apple, a pear, some strawbs and about 2 tbs good plain yogurt.
20 minutes of prep, then hanging around the next 1 1/2 hours every two weeks. Breakfast prep takes the time it takes to wash and chop the fruit.

Cinnamon, nutmeg, yogurt, bananas, maybe a little brown sugar if I used unsweetened yogurt.
And I use oatmeal in lots of stuff: meat loaf, a little added to various homemade bread recipes or sprinkled on the top of banana bread, spice bread and muffins.
