Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trek 2.1 2011

Is, say $500, a good price for a pretty much new (lightly used) Trek 2.1 2011 a good price?

I have a 2001 Specialized Sirrus Comp. Is this considered a grandma's bike? Or is it still relevent? Should I upgrade with the specialized or purchasde the trek 2.1?

2001 Specialized Sirrus Comp - BikePedia

I would be what people call "noob" or "newbie" in this hobbie. I have the specialized, a trek for my wife, and youth bike for daughter, and a bike front seat for my toddler. I would like to upgrade.

The Sirrus is a flat-bar bike, the 2.1 has drop bars. Which one is right for you depends on the kind of riding you are going to do - the distances and the intensity. You shouldn't care at all if other people think the Sirrus is a bike for a fred if you are happy being a fred.

There's no such thing as a bike no longer being "relevant", though it may no longer be the ideal bike for you. The way you write your question suggests you care more about how people view you and your bike, rather than what your riding needs may be.

$500 may be a fair price for a 2011 Trek 2.1. See
https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/Sear...50&model=60895

But it depends a lot on whether the parts are original or upgraded (or downgraded) and the condition. It depends even more on whether the bicycle actually fits you.

I see. Thanks. We do mostly family rides; however, it tends to be slow and steady rides. I'd like to get some speedy and alone rides every now and then which is why I'm looking at the 2.1. I thought I should ask here before proceeding. I don't know whether the parts are original, upgraded, or downgraded. I'll ask.

If you want to move in the direction of longer, harder, and faster, the Trek 2.1 is an excellent starter bike. A 2010 2.1 was my first somewhat serious bike, and I have close to 20,000 miles on it now.

It's all in what you want bro.

The flat bar is good for slow, the roadie for fast.

the 2011 2.1 was on my very short list when I bought my GT (which I've since passed on to my 15yr old son), I only didn't get the trek cuz I was on a really tight budget. the red/black 2.1 was a good looking, comfortable fitting, and smooth riding bike for me. I wouldn't hesitate on a clean used version for a starter bike. nice ride that will last even good rider a long time.

The Specialized is still relevant. Not cutting edge, but then again, neither is the Trek 2.1. For family rides of a couple of hours at a slow to moderate pace, the Specialized is fine, maybe even better than the Trek. If you are looking to do fast club rides, maybe even a century ride, the Trek is probably the better bike.

If you can afford it, keep the Specialized for the family rides and buy the Trek for your solo rides.

You really don't want to put a bike front seat on the Trek (not sure I'd want that for a toddler on any bike, but that's just me).

In any case, the hybrid (Sirrus) is better suited for the family rides.

Ok. So after doing some number crunching I came down to a budget of $1350. And, after googling around I came to a good reading to help provide necessary answers:

1. What do I want to do on my bike?
* Do easy club rides, enjoying the scenery and good company
* Do club rides, building my strength so I can do longer, faster rides

2. What’s my realistic budget?
*$1300-$1400 total for "two" bikes. One for me and one for the wife.

3. Frame material expectations?
* Light as possible yet comfortable. However, weight > comfort if I must choose one of the two.

4. Gearings:
a. How strong am I? Mediocre. Her? Weak.
b. How much am I pllaning to train? Once per week, if possible.
c. How hilly? Flat and hilly.
d. Am I willing to struggle some while I learn how to climb and build a better
power to weight ratio? Yes.
e. Do I need high gears and narrow range? I don't know how to answer this as a newbie.
f. Do I need a wider range of gears because I’m more interested in being
comfortable and not straining while I ride, and I’m not intending to train for
speed. Mixture of comfort and speed/train is the goal. However, if I must choose: speed>comfort.

5.How important is it for me to build a relationship with a shop that’s geographically
accessible? Can I do my own maintenance or will I always want a shop to do it? I would need a shop to do it.

Here are the options (Please feel free to add your bike recommendations):

https://www.merlincycles.com/merlin-...016-85148.html

Product: Fuji Sportif 1.5D Road Bike - 2015 (If I can find it)

And, the 2011 Trek 2.1.

Don't forget your recommendations

I think that's exactly what I will do. Thanks!

Ok. I picked up a 2006 Giant TCR Comp 2 for 550. I hope this will do the trick.
