[QUOTE=texaspandj;21104481]My number one concern would be to see if that seatpost is stuck @TriBiker19 .
My first thought too . To get that thing unstuck try the RT method , get a can of PB Blaster , first spray from the top . Now remove the BB and spray from the bottom , this might take a week or two . Also a vise bolted to a bench that is bolted to the ground is a must . Good luck and we know you will keep us posted .

That is a very worthy project. I wonder why the paint is bad at the lug edges. The paint on most IM holds up really well. Maybe you can just refinish the lugs and save the rest of the paint? That little nub is a pump peg. A frame pump can fit between it and the seat lug under the top tube. Stuck seat posts can be very challenging. Before you do anything drastic, search a little on here and ask beforehand. In my opinion, there is little or no difference between the 105 that came on your bike and 6 speed 600. The 105 brakes and levers are awesome and I dare say rival some dual pivots. I am very excited about yours today as I just sold mine and miss it.

If you are not opposed to newer type brakes , may I suggest dual pivot Tektros . I have them on my 86' IM , they are far better than single pivot brakes . They come in clear ano . as well as black , you will need short reach and recess nut .

I got this from a seller who was on the east coast (I could see the ocean from where I picked it up.) I'm guessing the salt water might have played a part of why it is so corroded. My husband has been working on older cars and has PB blaster so we can let it sit for a while. We're up for a challenge and he likes having something purposeful to do. Right now he's given me his side of the garage for bikes, and he quickly forgave me for blowing out the tire on his mountain bike because my youngest wanted to ride trails and his was the only bike available.
Thanks for the info on "upgrading" the 105 to a 600. If I don't have to spend money, I don't want to. In my errands tomorrow I'm bringing the bike to my automotive guy just to get a color match, even if I don't use it, I want to know that he can get me the color in a pinch. I've already looked up decals and will be taking precise measurements on where they are. I want it to look original, even if it's not.
We love projects and this is a small on compared to the other stuff we've done. We're cheap Yankees, even though he's a Buffalo guy. He was offering to start disassembly the other day and I said I wanted to post it here first. You guys are great. Thank you.

Yesterday after my wife and I took our daughter to first day at preschool, my wife took the whole day off. So we headed of on a 3 mile trail run. Then on a leisurely ride on the the river walk ( MUP ). Eventually we trailed off to business/restaurant downtown and ate lunch. Before we knew it, it was time to pick up my daughter. My wife rode her '86 50cm red and white Classic Ironman and I was in my '89 summertime blues Ironman. She hadn't ridden in a year but has been doing a spin class once a week where she's always ranked 1st or 2nd in some type of results she receives. Anyways she noticed right away her saddle needed to be raised. At later said she's ready for cycling shoes and clip ins. Currently she's using regular pedals and running type shoes. I noticed too that my recently converted to road bike (bars) Ironman saddles was pointed a bit down, but all was remedied after lunch and much better Now.
The day before (monday) I rode with my regular riding buddy in the evening at 6pm. He dropped me for the third time since we've been riding together (maybe 2 years now). I mean he's getting better but honestly I was not feeling good. Of course I don't want to tell him that but I know and we all know when we get on a bike if we're gonna have a good ride or not. Especially when you take off fast which is what he always does. Anyways just more motivation for me and it just adds fuel to my fury.. I mean fire.
It's all good I realize on tough days like that, that it just makes me stronger. And yes that 32 mile ride was tough. Hilly (for us), hot, and his constant accelerating. Listen the boy can spin. He has a smooth pedaling stroke and possibly allows him to recover quicker after a hard effort. Meanwhile I have a slower cadence. But I'm very confident I can take him in a time trial. But ultimately I know this thrashing us good for me and my intentions of going on club rides soon.
As far as the newly converted to road bike stays Ironman is concerned, it performed well. However I noticed my saddle was too forward, the front brake cable was dragging, and the specialized turbo competition 23 tires were Harder Than The Times Of '29. Jeez loweez, those tires are like rocks. But they'll have to do for now. They came off the wheels I just picked up. Those narrow/hard tires are perfect for a 23 year old 5'7" 145 pound me but Not the current ME!
Later IronKids.

Thanks for the post @phtomita , looks like a stock survivor , well ok , seat / post / pedals / bar tape . But check those Suzue hubs .
Thanks @felslider . Here is a catalog picture . Subject bike , I think is a later date manufacture . Note the lack of fender mounts and no black ano. on the big ring .

So after three days of soaking it with PB blaster, a big wrench and some brute force, the seat post still won't move. *sigh*
What's my next step? Heat? Cold? Ammonia? Attempt to collapse the post after sawing off the seat? Targeted small scale nuclear explosion?

If you've only tried big wrench twisty force, maybe try some vibratory or swift blow therapy? Or on the chemical front.. ATF/diesel 50/50 mix is what some internal combustion mechanics swear by for freeing pistons. I'd think you could sub in any solvent of your choice for the diesel.

My '86 Classic Ironman is the Shiznik. After riding my Carbon Ironman on a 30 mile ride yesterday it became even more clear how Bad A the Classic is.
Yesterday was my first workout day while my daughter was at preschool. I didn't swim or eat breakfast that morning. I ran at least 6 miles. Then I ate lunch. Then went on a 30 mile ride on my Carbon Ironman. I could tell my saddle too far back and too high. Also the elbow rest were too narrow. It was amazingly Hot. The temp was only 98 or so at the time and reaching over 100 for high. But it was just different. Today's forecast the same thing. Anyways, the first time I had to stop to get water on a short 30 mile ride.
This morning I pulled down my '86 Classic and compared measurements against my Carbon Ironman. And just as I suspected the measurements were off. I remedied it and decided to pull down my Miami Vice even though I don't remember having a fit issue with it, and sure enough no tweaking necessary.
Back to my '86 Classic, what a bike. The fit, the handling, the Coolness, its just AWESOME. IF my Carbon doesn't straighten up and fly right I'm gonna use the Classic Ironman for our hometown half Ironman Oct 27th.
Three of my Ironman are 54cm (as measured by Centurion) and the fourth one is one size smaller (52cm) which makes it perfect for my road bike setup. I just couldn't understand how my measurements for my Carbon Ironman was off. I know it has 172.5 crankarms and the other two 54cm have 170 but I always measure to pedal spindle. Oh well it's fixed now .

Horrible pic but (and I can't stress this enough) AWESOME Bike.
The only original components/parts is the Crankset, brake calipers, saddle and stem.
The seatpost and brake levers are Shimano 600.
The Headset, BB, RD, FD, Freewheel and Hubs are Dura Ace.
I'm One with the bike on this Ironman.

According to the guy who built-up the Sante-equipped bike, it's 700c/650c.
Here's another one on Flickr, from some guy in Stuttgart, Germany.
I don't think that would match the Miami Vice. A white fork would work though.
