Bike shorts suggestions

I'm looking for a good pair of cycling shorts. Specially, a pair that offers good padding. It seems that you can find some pretty good deals on some shorts, but the padding in these tend to be not all that great.

I appreciate any suggestions you can offer.

Thanks !

I love the Assos F1 Mille shorts because they are really comfortable for me and have a lot of compression, which I like. Just one suggestion.

Bibs, not half shorts. Once you go bib, you never go back.

I like AeroTech Pro tighty shorts. Good value, with their older style plain pad. The non-3D type. Looks like a chamois sanitary napkin. Not like a cyborg exoskeleton. Or a man's junk, like my other 3D padding.

Seriously, what is wrong with you bike shorts designers? How do I explain this at the laundromat without getting arrested for public indecency? This looks like something Quagmire would wear on Family Guy.

There are tons of great quality bibs out there, depending on what you want to spend.

Personally, for newbies, I always recommend the Performance Ultras. You can get them in plain black and the logos aren't annoyingly huge, so they go with just about anything. They're high quality (not the best, not the worst, but they'll get you through a century), yet you can still pick them up for cheap if you watch the sales.

The cheaper shorts have thick foam padding.

I buy Pearl Izumi shorts, since I've found they fit me correctly. (But the legs tend to be a little too long.) Their more expensive models have thinner padding with a wicking fabric cover. I like that much better.

I tried quite a few different shorts over the years. Some had annoying creases at my upper thigh, due to non-optimal fit. That was really bad on a longer ride--I'd be pulling and adjusting the shorts a lot.

Thick padding

At the store, squeeze the thick pads. They usually squish down with little pressure, so that thickness won't do much when you are sitting on them. I think it's more "marketing" than "good design".

Bibs
I've never had bibs. The regular shorts stay in place for me, I don't have to keep pulling up the waistband like some riders.

I too am a fan of AeroTech Designs pads, I wear Black P. Petite Padded Bike Shorts - Black 5 inch Inseam shorts because I'm a short guy and the inseam fits me perfectly. The padding is also great, I've worn them comfortably for 65+ miles. Look for their made in the USA stuff too.

While gel pads sounds great and all, they aren't. The most uncomfortable chamois I have of all my kits is gel padded, I've read that several times on here as well.

I am agnostic on this. I have a pair of Specialized shorts with a mostly flat chamois, and some newer Gore and Craft shorts with the 3D style chamois. The Gore and Specialized shorts are equally comfortable.

You owe it to yourself to try bibs first. I have 10 pairs of shorts that are decent quality and I always found them comfortable and just what I wanted. Last week on a whim I bought a pair of Casteli bibs that were on sale just to try. I now curse my shorts every time I put them on so I'll be buying more bibs. The shorts don't move, ride up, anything, just now know how comfy it is to have no freakin waistband for 3 hours of pedaling and I see what I've been missing.

I think I can count on two hands the number of times I had to take a dump while wearing bib shorts. Full-zip jerseys take care of any "problem." No. 1 is no harder with bibs. You simply pull down the front and bend you knees a bit if you have to.

Maybe you don't have a problem, but I do. Is there a problem that I have a different opinion than you do?

No, and I never suggested that there is such a problem, so I am left to conclude that you are tying to pick a fight by reading my comments in a strained manner rather than as explanatory and as offering a potential solution to your problems with bibs. Unfortunately, that's all to common on BF.

Enjoy the day, and try to not to warp things into personal attacks when they are not.

Or not. I bought a pair of bibs this year. Retail for $180 but got them on deep discount for $50. They were OK. Different but not necessarily better than shorts. Not bad but hardly the revelation some make them out to be. I put them in the rotation, but I like my Gore and Specialized shorts better. Moreover, I didn't realize it but the side panels are translucent so my butt cheeks are visible from the side and back. This might be a good look for some skinny roadies, but not a great look for me.

Hard to make a recommendation without knowing your riding habits, ie. length of typical rides, whether racing, commuting or just recreational. For example, if you only ride a few miles here and there or your longest ride is maybe 5-miles, you likely can get away with less expensive shorts. On the other hand if you typically are putting in excess of 5 miles, racing and/or doing some long distance rides you should look at the higher end shorts such as Assos and other similar quality. I so far have been happy with Voler which come in at a palatable price point but serve me well.

If you are only doing 5 miles, you don't really need bike shorts at all. My advice is to stay away from the cheapest stuff. Beyond that, it really is a personal preference.

True enough but there are some folks who prefer a bike short, even though doing short rides.

I like Aero tech as well, partly for the colors
They also don't get too thick on the padding which I like
