Remember to watch out for the falling water bottles when going down hill on the highway portion!

You mean like at 7:58 here?

They really shouldn't hand out bottled water that unprepared riders are invariably going to try to wedge into bottle cages.

So any ride reports from this year's tour? Any big bottlenecks, weather or other problems? Spill on the good, the bad and the ugly.

Weather generally held up this year. A few light showers here and there, but mostly dry for the entire event. A couple of bottlenecks in the usual places, but an enjoyable ride, for those who understand this is just a slow paced ride through NYC streets.

For 40 years now. If you want to get a feel for it, go to Flickr or YouTube. Plenty of pictures and video.

Sign up early in January, usually sells out quickly. A great ride on streets/roads we normally would never have an opportunity to ride on a bicycle without any other motorized traffic. Lots of fun, if you make it what it should be....lots of fun for any level of cyclist.

I was in the 8:10AM takeoff, the "second wave." All went very well despite the crowds. Weather was cool but, thankfully, dry. There were a few crashes, quite a few mechanicals, including one split carbon rim that may have been caused by a pothole (just a guess). I rode to the Astoria water stop and grabbed a clif bar and more water, and rode straight to Staten Island at a nice easy pace. Crowds were thick compared to last year, though, since quite a few riders dropped out last year due to the cold rain.

The only challenging part of the course was the BQE where we rode right into a pretty stuff headwind. The logistics set up by the Bike NY folks were very good, all lines moved well on Staten Island, and there was no wait for the ferry back to Manhattan. Well worth doing, no question. No bad for me this year.

I was first wave and despite the crowd, everything moved along nicely. Only saw one minor accident. Funny thing about the southwest breeze was that at the top of the Verrazano, it was eerily quiet.

This really should be on every cyclist's bucket list. It's quite an experience.
