Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I bought it for much less (incentives from Trek for bike shop employees) and it's not even worth like 1500 bucks now, but still. I would imagine that even if a person bought the bike and subscribed year round, it wouldn't be near the cost of your road bike+mountain/cross bike+helmet+bottles+bibs+jerseys+shoes+pedals and on and on.

And yeah, to clarify: My Dura Ace eqipped Carbon Domane sits on the trainer. It hasn't seen pavement in months. My aluminum Crockett with 105 *gasp* 10 speed does all the real miles. One of these days I'll go somewhere with real hills and free the Domane from its prison.
I suppose if someone LOVES spin classes at the gym and is not a cyclist (ie. does not have a bicycle), then the Peloton may be a reasonable choice. Still pricey. You could get a $100 CL bike and a budget trainer for a lot less than the Peloton bike.

I have my old steel bike dedicated to the trainer, and my $500 KICKR Snap works fine so the up-front cost was really just the trainer.

Not to mention that a real bike + trainer is just a wee bit more versatile. I mean, it obviously has a place in the market at this point, there's just not much Venn overlap between road cyclists and Peloton users.

Pretty sure there is no immunization out for that.

That's just how I envision their entire target demographic. People who don't actually ride bikes, but are well off enough that a $2500 stationary bike is a treatyoself kind of object and 39 bucks a month is almost nothing to them.

Edit: A reminder of their marketing technique: https://www.bicycling.com/culture/a2...witter-parody/

Just drove (actually long-suffering spouse drove) in from NC and now have to get on the trainer to recover a little from another @LAJ style weight session. It was inflicted yesterday in a huge, fancy, suburban gym, where any random child or woman could have broken me like a twig.

I also twingled my left quadratus lumborum, injured many time before, at the end of the last set of deadlifts. It’s going to bother me whenever I stand up until April.

What there is might consist of the male partners of women who own those things, e.g., a couple of the people I ride with.

Plus, my understanding is a lot of the spin class fans are fans for the social aspects as well, and riding a Peloton at home isn't the same. Indoor training at home is more of a thing for people who will then go ride outside at some point...

What always puzzled me was the heavy Peloton advertising on the TDF broadcast. What's the overlap between pro cycling fans and spin fans? Seems small.

Oh, the ride today indicates that, while my endurance hasn't suffered too much, my top end is gone, daddy, gone. I'll have to make a point of training that if I intend to be in halfway decent form when group rides roll around in the spring.

So it's time for the obligatory "So I started riding again, and I have this new physical ailment" post.

Ok, so not new, but it flared up in the last couple of weeks. I have had issues with left foot numbness most likely caused by a Morton's Neuroma between the 3rd and 4th digits. It has only ever been painful once that I can recall in the past, but it seems as I've upped the mileage, it tends to get numb pretty quick. Maybe after 30-60 minutes on the bike. It's happening with both shoes, and neither toe box feels tight. Wondering if the pads that lift behind the ball of the foot might make the difference or not.

They're drinking their own Kool Aid and don't know any better? I mean, market research is big, my wife works in the field, because companies don't always know how they're perceived by various demographics.

I feel like there is enough "Wow, I'm inspired, but not enough to go out in the heat of summer and do all that" sort of audience. Now whether or not it makes sense to put that in the full length stage broadcast at 4 a.m. vs. the weekend NBC highlights reel, that's another question.

Oh, God, so do I. If they’re smart and successful double that.

My wife played center on the varsity BBall team when we were in college and has a doctorate from MIT.

When I was bartending, I had a semi-regular customer that would come in for beers and to play darts with me - we were both very competitive. She also happened to be a starter and second leading scorer for the U of M basketball team (something that I learned when I saw her on the front page of the Sports section). I was infatuated with her but was convinced that I was firmly in the friend zone. Or maybe that's just what I told myself because I was dating my employer's sister at the time.
