What are you riding and how much are you pulling?

There are a lot of threads on here about about weight limits, frame materials, spoke count, etc. Usually a few (or more!) awesome forum members chime in with their experiences with different equipment at different weights. I thought it might be helpful to have a thread that would serve as a sort of clearinghouse for information about what kinds of bikes people are riding and at what weights. I know I'd find it interesting to see the breadth of equipment and experience on here.

I'll go first:

I'm riding my one and only road bike (so far!) a 2002 Specialized Allez Elite Al frame. I busted some spokes on the stock tires when I was young and 225 pounds. No now am riding on a set of 28 spoke (will check and confirm) wheels at around 255-260 with no problems (except that I can't get back down to 225).

I'm riding my Vilano hybrid with 32 spoke wheels and a 250 pound weight limit. I started riding it at around or a little over 250 lbs, but thankfully have dropped down to 220 (and still working on it). I did break some spokes in the past but everything's running smoothly here lately. I've but a few thousand miles on the bike since I bought it new two years ago.

2013 Trek Madone 6.5
36/36 Velocity Deep-V Wheels

It's an ex Trek Travel bike that likely saw a lot of miles before I found it for sale at my LBS in March. It was originally purchased with Bontrager RXL TLR wheels, but after about 200 miles I began popping at least a spoke per ride and switched to the Velocities. I have about 400 miles on them now without any issues.

Mostly riding a Waterford 1200's, the older one has a Campy triple 10 speed setup, the newer one has Shimano Ultegra 8000 setup. I weigh about 220 and haven't had any problems with the wheels, both sets are 36 spokes, rims on the older one are Mavic open pros and the newer ones are Velocity Fusion.

I'm 235 pounds right now, down from 295.

I ride a Waterford RST-22 and a Gunnar Sport, both with 9-speed triples (52-42-26 chainrings and 13-34 cogsets), full Ultegra setups except for XT MTB rear derailleurs.

Both bikes have Mavic Open Pro wheels with 36-spoke rims.

360 pounds plus or minus five depending on the day riding a 60 cm Orbea Orca with Rolf Prima "Vigor RS" wheels (24 spoke count), Deda carbon fiber bars, and a few other modifications. I also ride on 700 x 25mm Maxxis Padrone tubeless tires.

The Orca is a race geometry.

Right now about 215 lbs riding this (custom ti) with 32h Stan's No Tube rims. Can't remember which ones though. Hand built around CK hubs. Never had wheel problems, although the hub cracked and CK warrantied it. DA 9000.

Don't drool.

When touring, I carrying a lot of weight on this. 36h Alex Adventurer. New had any wheel problems even though I have taken it on some rough, hilly/mountainous, unpaved roads. Into its 8th season. Also serves as my commuter/errand bike.

220 pound woman, currently riding a Trek Domane AL3 (women's specific) road bike with no problems, original tires/wheels/everything right now. When I was 235 I started on my Trek DS 8.3 hybrid, also original equipment, zero problems.

IF? You should try it and see how it goes. It was a challenge at first (the body thinks its starving), but once you're over the hump, its as natural as the pattern that was made by the dust on a butterfly's wings.

Never popped a spoke on my old Trek, but my only problem was my rear wheel would constantly go out of true. Once the weight was down those issues become a thing of the past. Presently at 193 down from 249.

I really do need to give it another push. A few years back I was down to around 235, but then I let a crappy work schedule (~4 am to 5:30 pm) get the better of me. I haven't ditched the junk food, so no weight is coming off despite burning an extra 3500 calories on the bike each week. It's frustrating and easy to fall back into feeling like a failure.

Anyway...

Counted my spokes. I'm running on 32 spoke wheels, which haven't given me any troubles over a few thousand miles.

All your bike/wheel troubles can be solved just by lightening the load. After all, that is what most of us that take up cycling for in the first place. However, none of us can forget that weigh is by far a product of caloric intake. Just start gradually, that's how I did it, and have a goal.

No pic, maybe later after I install my Elemnt Bolt when it arrives later today ... but I ride a 2009 Trek 1.2 Triple ... AL frame, probably north of 5K miles on it, if not more. Wheels are Fulcrum Racing 7s I bought about 7 years ago now. I think the rear is 24, the front a 20. Largely bombproof wheels that I've been thrilled with.

I've been anywhere between 320 to 255 on this bike ... currently hovering around 275 and aiming a bit lower.

Currently 128kg~280lb. Ride a Canyon Ultimate CFSL but have a custom 28/32 wheelset built by Prowheelbuilder with Kinlin XC279s laced to DA hubs. I ran Shimano RS81 in C50 for a bit and those were nice wheels, but my attention went to full track mode so I wasn’t riding them enough and sold them. I also ride a custom Duratec Sprinter T2 track bike and a Scott Scale 960 that is about to be upgraded

Currently going at 232 lbs. And while I am not riding it YET, I just picked up a Co-Motion Norwester frame. Reynolds 853 air hardened steel, baby! This should build into a PERFECT Clyde bike for RAGBRAI, Centuries, and such. Has mount points for fenders (meh) and a rack (gotta roll with all my supplies) and should still build up into the 24.x lb range with pedals, saddle and rack. Got Ultegra compact 6700 and Kysrium elites on there now and working out stem and set back on the seat post, then should be GOOD TO GO.

Only issue is the color. 'Vanilla Shake'. Bleh. Fancy winter painting project, methinks.

6'5", 230 pounds. Just finished this build two days ago. NOS 2013 Cervélo S2 frame with full SRAM Force 22, 11-28 in the back and 39-53 in the front. Fulcrum Racing Quattro LG wheels with Continental GP4000IIs, 3T carbon bars and Ritchey stem. Always ridden Selle Italia SLR saddles so kept the pattern here.
Only have about 60 miles on it in the last two days but so far it's amazing.

2017 Trek Neko. My weight was 230 when I started riding it and down to 210 now. I’ve got a rack and have even carried groceries on it without issues. I’m hoping to upgrade to gravel, considering a Trek Checkpoint or a Giant GX1. I’m glad to see so many of you haven’t had any issues with the rims on your Trek Road bikes. Although hopefully I can take off a few more pounds before I make the upgrade.

Currently ride a 2008 Specialized Allez Elite. I go anywhere between 245 - 250, although keep trying to get that weight lower. After popping a spoke while on a down hill, I replaced the stock wheels a few years ago. Now riding on Bontrager RL's with 24 spokes. Since changing the wheels I have not had any problems with these wheels and or spokes.
