Hey, all you guys (including the guy that speaks Latin) I had a revelation....I have a Kawasaki KLR 650 dual sport and was thinking that I would make this into two trips. The first one would be a pre run of the trail (all 500 miles of what I would bicycle), camp, recon it all, then the second trip (later in the Summer) do the Mtb hammering. I thought that might give me much addl insight on the whole adventure. Yes, I'm prepared to take heat from any bicycle only purists, I'm just brainstorming this as a possibility! You know motorcycle exploration is fun too. Raydog

A Scouting Trip sounds Capital, simply Capital! And its a smart idea. I bet Doug will even post a picture of him on a bike to illustrate the point.

^^ My pics are too old skool. But I would suggest throwing in a Barstow-to-Vegas warmup on the KLR somwhere in the mix. (Will the BLM let you do that anymore?)

Also, late summer is way better than June. You might not be aware that typical June weather in northwestern Montana is day after day of continuous rain.

RAYDOG, I'm hoping to catch up with the Reno crowd on the Pony Express for 4 or 5 days sometime. I can't take time for the whole thing, but a long weekend. It sure looks fun!

You know, back before the war broked out, I was a saucier in San Antone. I bet I could collar up some of them greens. Yeah, noodle some crawfish out the paddy, yo. Ha! And maybe some crab apples for dessert, now, you hear? Hell yeah.

You could have an unusual value in a bike camp!

It was a bit of a chuckle reading a post that said something like "don't buy XYZ, that's a pile of poopy". No prizes for guessing what word had been substituted there...

No horntooting here about how manly I am....having said that, I am a 64 year old Viet Nam vet Marine, have riden 120-200 miles weekly for last 3 years(year round), am not a trained survivalist but expert handgun shot, decent bike mechanic, and retired innercity cop....more self description sounds like like a big brag so I'll end this with I'm also quite durable and hardy! I am concerned with the level of gear required, last year I started out across Nevada (roadie) with a Bob trailer and ended up sending half my crud home at a distant post office! If I end up doing this alone, I would rent a SATphone. I don't have enough solo/wilderness travel experience to truthfully speak in depth to the gear required for days "outback". BTW thank you for bringing this up (and everybody elses input as well...it brings me to a much higher level of reality about the magnitude of the journey).
I like long rides that at least pass through civilisation, so I can do things like buy a hot meal and refill my water bottles. My primary concern about long rides through wilderness areas would relate to the simple availability of water, shelter and food. Lunchtime stops at the pub are great because they make it easy to get a hot meal and refill all my water bottles (including the one inside me) without having to hunt for it.
If you're the kind of survival expert who can eat the stripped bark of trees and find water in the Sahara they may be lesser concerns for you (that's not meant as a dig, just an observation that I have no experience whatsoever at finding potable water in the wilderness)

I know what you mean about "pit stops" in civilization! I'll go anywhere and do anything, just let me shower and eat at a cafe occasionally. This Great Divide route is way more primative than that so a much greater effort on mileage planning and proper supplies is manditory. I'm happy with my strength and conditioning, just concerned about the other stuff! (in an exciting and fun way)
