Best shoes for extra wide and large feet?
helping a buddy get into casual mt. biking, tame trails and then walks around downtown for coffee etc. Super large feet , size 13- 4E wide.
Can anyone recommend some good shoes in the $75. to $100. range.
Plans to use Shimano SPD with a wide platform like M530's. Are the new Shimano "extra wide" shoes actually wide?

My feet are a few sizes down from him, loving my Giro Privateers HV. The HV is for high volume, wider and taller. I can recommend those. If his feet are more wide that thick then add some insole. Don't know what the retail on those are any more, mine are a few years more, but I know I'm cheap so they must have not been expensive.

You asked for a budget pick, but some things are worth ponying up the dough for --
Look for a closeout price on the Sidi Dominator in the Mega width size
I just took possession of a pair of Genius's (The Dominators road brother) -- and it is wide enough that I am going to have to start wearing socks again -- I also have a extra wide foot
Oooops -- just re-read the part about casual mtb trails and coffee shop rides, etc. ----- on second thought, I don't have any idea --- the Dominator is a cheaper shoe in the Sidi lineup, but that's like saying the Mercedes G class is a real steal compared to the M class suv's

Unless you can find the Sidi dominator (Mega (wide size)) on sale, it will probably cost a lot more than $100 to get the right size shoes. Alternatives are to go to flat pedals and try 5010s, or find some wide skate shoes, like Vans.

I just ordered a pair (actually two to see which fits better) of the Giro Privateer HV's on clearance from REI for $75. Looks like as of now they still have 47 and 48's in stock. I tend to be a wide 12-13 depending on brand and I hear Giro's run small and narrow so I figured I would try both of these and see if one will work. Worth a look, I don't think you're going to find a better deal if they work for you.

Looks like the Giro 48 HV is going to work for me but it's not as wide as my Merrell wide shoes. Based on the shoes I tried in some shops around here, I expect the Sidi Megas will be wider.
