This was last year when the snow actually made an effort to stick around It was gone the next evening.

New winter bike this year is a Salsa Journeyman 700c Sora. Outfitted with Schwalbe Marathon Winter studded 35's, Ortlieb bags, and Velo Orange fenders with matching paint. Great commuting setup!

''92-ish Hard Rock Sport, purchased for the princely sum of $25. Didn't really need anything except fresh lube. Even the tires were fresh. I've added the rack and cockpit goodies, and fitted a set of salmon Kool Stops. This is before I swapped on the Suomi Mount & Ground (?) studded tires. 10-LED MonkeyLight and two NiteIze Spoke-Lites on the front wheel. I also prepped a set of old wheels with plain-old Kenda knobbies. Only really needed the studs on one commute so far this season. I was a little concerned about the operation of the trigger shifters at low temperatures, below 20F, but they're buttery smooth.

That ^^^^^ purple-green fade is a clone of one of my fair-weather bikes. I think at least one other member has one; look for the "Old Rockhoppers" thread here in C&V. Awesome ride; I commuted on it most of the summer, on account of road construction on EVERY route option..

impressive & sounds like it functions perfectly! I made one from a mouse pad this year & it's held on w/ 2 binder clips. not elegant like yours & since my fender doesn't go down so low, the functionality is better than without, but my BB & chain rings still take a hit. well done Sir

Thanks! I got sick of riding my clunky old (but reliable) rigid 26" mountain bike during the winter months. While this is not a featherweight setup by any means, it does provide a bit more enjoyable ride, while still maintaining function and reliability!

The rack is a Bontrager Backrack Deluxe - size large (Salsa frame is a 55.5cm). I have the same rack on my Trek 520, and was able to make sure it would work well before I ordered it from the LBS. I like the dropped side rails, which lets you run bags, and still have the top free if needed.

Just added the disc brake in time for winter this year! Its made a world of difference over the previous rim brake in the snow and grime. Couldn't live without the studded tires.
It was below 0 almost every day last week and my 8mi commute was no problem (for the bike that is
). I think I could use some heated socks or something when it hits -10 but otherwise I'm set up pretty well!

It's an anti-theft device. I'm surprised you haven't seen them. I'm sure you'll see them in Boston. Come to think of it, I should put one on my commuter bike.

^^^^^ Never seen a chain like that; the little cable "seat leash" was all the rage around here many years ago around here when QR saddle theft was more common. I'm sure it still happens here, just doesn't seem as rampant.

Thanks! That just kinda happened. The chain around the seat rails and the seat stays is just a trick to make the saddle harder to nab when I lock the bike up. Its a brooks c15 so I just wanted to be careful. Not like its gonna stop someone who really wants it, but at least some dummy with a allen key cant just walk off with it.
