Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ouch. The bone breakage doesn't give me the willies like the ligament detachment.

Cast off on Valentine's day!

Well that's a bummer, but it'll be good to be whole and functional again.

God, that sucks! Will the hand be partially functional?

I ripped a ligament partially off my left pinkie in a sailing accident last year and that was unpleasant enough.

The one thing that scares me sailing is being de-gloved. I quit wearing my wedding ring on the boat years ago.

And falling out of the bosun's chair on those rare occasions I go up.

There is an Amazon seller selling a pair of Conti GP5000 clinchers in size 700X32 for $400!

There must be some really stupid people out there.

We have worn silicone rings for the last decade or so because of the boat, the gym, and the bike. We'll put on the bling if we go somewhere fancy, but who goes anywhere anymore?

I cut too many rings off bashed fingers as a lad in white pants to make that mistake.

That's sure the truth. My business meal and entertainment expense is down 90% this year compared to 2019.

Probably less so than it is now. The surgery is supposed to return it to function, but I will likely end up with arthritis in 10 or 20 years.

I meant, will you have a few useful fingers while it's casted? We'll all have arthritis if we live.

Hospital house staff used to wear whites back in the day. Pants saved you from having to wear a stupid coat and were trés cool.

Later, however, I was a USPHS commissioned officer for 27 years and had a set of service dress whites and a choker jacket. Maybe I can dig up a pic.

Hill ride done. It was chilly, windy, and overcast. We did most of the notorious hills of the North. 100% fun.

Heidi is considering a minor in photography and used this to justify buying a DSLR camera. She is now avidly taking pics of Jackie the cat.

As long as her major enables her to make a decent living upon graduation!

Told our kids straight up - we will not pay for a liberal arts degree. (even though both mom and dad have them).

In my experience the real racers are actually quite kind and willing to adjust pace for the group. The few French Showers I know are “wannabe racers” who think they are hot ***** but are not.

On a club ride a couple years ago, one such jerk was pushing the pace and generally being a show-off a-hole, and a newbie rider I had chatted up with was understandably impressed, and asked me “Does he race??”

My reply: “No, but he thinks he is racing.”
Luckily people like him are fairly rare.

Her major is Film and Media Studies. Unclear how well this will prepare her for the workforce but we are letting her chase her dreams. She is a smart kid so should do OK however she lands. I hope.

There's more money made in entertainment and tech that just about any other industry.

Worst case, she moves back in with you!

One of our nephews is pursuing the same. Where does your daughter go to school?

So do we and we went on to do total hard-ass science afterward, as did daughter.

Yeah, and when the elites deign to ride with the likes of us, they already have 300 mi for the week or an "A" race this weekend.

She is a freshman at USC. They allegedly have the best film program in the country. But online for now because COVID19.

And no, we did not bribe anyone to help her get in.

Great school, and she had to be doing well to get in. It's good to have smart kids!

As for the bribe, it might not have been that bad to share a cell with Lori Laughlin for a spell.

Our daughter received her bachelor ('18) and masters ('19) in accounting from the McCombs business school at UT (the real UT - Texas). She is now a CPA with Deloitte. Our son will receive his bachelors in engineering in May from Texas A&M, and plans to pursue a masters in structural engineering. We count our blessings every day and are just hoping that they will take good care of us as we age.
