We had the same thing happen like 2 weeks after we moved in. Luckily we had a close friend that showed me how to cut the pipe out and install the new piece. It would have been costly if we didn’t know him.

I could see being frustrated if the group was regularly waiting on one person in particular, but that doesn't seem to be the case, here, so he should just stuff it.
Beyond that, though, and I can only speak of my own club, groups are often more than just a collection of people that ride together. Even within a fairly well-matched group, there's an ebb and flow and some people will be faster some years, slower others. When someone starts lagging, usually because they've been kept out of the saddle by life, we will, at the very least, regroup. Often, we'll dial it back after we've had a chance to burn some matches. Sometimes, we'll dial it back and shelter someone if they're really hurting.
That and there's also different expectations for different rides - the pace is pushed on Wed, whereas weekends are usually longer, easier rides, but with some taking it upon themselves to go for town signs, etc.

I've been encouraging my son to sign up for one our local bands when he finishes school as a way to keep it going. He played in the Aggie wind symphony until last spring semester when his classes conflicted with rehearsal times. He still plays in the school pep band,, and has taken some really cool trips with the basketball teams, including the mens' NCAA Sweet 16 round his first year. For doing that he gets a lot of swag and a free all sports pass each year.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think theoretically (1) the brain/motor signals could somehow be enhanced, or (2) possibly the "pain" of exertion could be deadened?
