You have to maintain the same power output as the Rabobank team to keep up (just like a fast group ride). You can set the system to do a smaller percentage of their power output though if you wish (80%, etc,). I did it yesterday at 100% of their output and was right at my threshold up most of the hills. It is a fun and challenging workout.

Monday I did the 4 hour "Alpine Classic" workout https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhG12AUsr8c

This one includes climbs of the Col du Telegraphe, Col du Galibier and Alpe d'Huez (the exact same climbs as in this years Tour de France). It replicates this ride as good as you could ever do on an indoor trainer. It took me just over 4 hours and kept my interest (not easy on a 4 hour trainer ride).

I also have another bike on a Kurt Kinetic trainer in the winter and use it with Spinervals and CTS workouts (Wisconsin - long winters). I think I prefer the Kurt Kinetic system slightly better but I can do much longer workouts on the Taxc Fortius.
Jeez man, just put on your rain gear and go ride. 4 hours on a trainer in August- I think you're going to regret missing that outdoor ride time come January.

I bought a computrainer at the turn of the century (I love being able to type that). Most of the year it sits there, but come the dead of NY winter, I use it. Quite a bit. It was worth every penny.

Anyone know if the pro form trainer free wheels? Most indoor cycles like that don't but a few do.

I'm sure it's because the thing tilts and could possibly throw someone really stupid off. The instruction manual will say to always wear a helmet though in practice no one will do so.

That being said, any device that can make it more interesting, tolerable or motivate you to do it is very valuable for any competitive cyclist trying to maintain fitness over the winter months. Many people simply can not get outdoors to ride between November and March. You can arguably get a better workout indoors on a good training setup than on a bike outside in sub freezing temps. IF you can get motivated to do the workouts. That's why that new product looks so appealing. I wish we could get somebody to post a first hand end user review.

There seems to be a lot of features for the asking price.
Living in So Cal, would you really use it that much? I view my $100 rollers as a questionable investment since I ride them so seldom.

If the money is in the budget I will be buying one of these this year. Right now it's too nice not to ride outside so I'm not spending the money.

I am not a customer for this stupidass fancy indoor bike. Trust me on this. I'd rather ride through a snowstorm, and I've actually done that a few times over the past couple of winters.

But if I was forced to train indoors I'd be quite interested.

Have you ever tried a CTS or Spinervals workout on a nice trainer (Kurt Kinetic). It was raining when I got home from work last night so I did the 1 hour CTS Race Power workout. There was enough variety to make the time go very fast and my Powertap file showed that it was the highest 1 hour TSS score of any ride I did all week. I would have been miserable outside fighting the rain and my workout wouldn't have been anywhere near as effective. I couldn't imagine living anywhere where there is cold and snow without these workouts.

For a fraction of the price of this TDF bike, you can have a high quality trainer and all the workout videos you want. This is a no-brainer for me. I own a Tacx Fortius system also but I am not sure if I would spend $1000 + on that virtual system again. It isn't as interesting or as effective as the trainer / DVD system.
