Help! In need of hybrid recommendations for a TALL man
Hello hello!
I am in desperate need of recommendations for a hybrid bike for my other half. He is about 6'8'' and primarily uses his bike to commute to work on a daily basis. His current bike is WAY too small and very heavy, so it is starting to take a toll on his knees. Can anyone recommend a few options for me to look into? I would like to stay in the $500-$700 range.
Thank you!

Welcome to BF! I don’t think you’ll find that finding a good commuter for a 6’8” rider for <$700 will be easy. Have you done any window shopping/info gathering at local bike shops? If you haven’t, doing so might be a productive move. Good luck with your search.

Have you tried the largest sizes available from the different brands? I´m leaning towards Specialized since they´ve been pushing those crazy tall headtubes lately. KHS and Zinn released a road bike for way tall riders a while back. Pricier, but its there. Also, look into hardtail 29 MTB since they generally have longer top tubes. Ask the dealer to swap the cranks for 180mm

Trek has some crazy big frames. If the largest of the DS or FX don't cut it, you could go for the massive 23" X-Cal at the entry level and just swap tires for something more commuterish (and maybe longer cranks).

1) Is his commute on paved and flat terrain, or are there hills?
2) Is he mechanically inclined with respect to bicycles?
3) Are there any bicycle co-ops near you guys anywhere?
Go to www.nashbar.com and order the XL Schwinn Madison single speed frame for about $100. Next, join a co-op and do your own build from donated parts. From my experience, most of the donated parts look pretty good!

If it's commute oriented and a hybrid fits the bill for him, that I can easily suggest Giant Escape all the way!! Their XL frames are significantly larger than everyone else's. (23" vs other's 21")
Top that off with the fact that their top tubes are significantly longer (that's the tube you throw your leg over when getting on a male's bike) and you've got a great recipe for fitting someone your SO's size!!!
I'm 6'3" and an XL in Giant's frame was too much for me!!

I got this 29er at Walmart (200.00). It's at the LBS upgrading the coaster brakes, seat and seat post, stem and handlebar, BB, added 3 teeth in front, added 180mm cranks, and replaced kick stand . All that's left is the frame, wheels and Shimano 7-speed rear derailleur from original bike. The frame is huge. I'm 6'1"" and I'm on my toes straddling the top bar. Easily converted to a Cruiser type Hybrid.
By the time this part of the upgrade is done the bike will be well within your price range.
29" Genesis Bike - Walmart.com
This is the bike how I got it
I gotta admit, I wish I knew about the Giant

Thank you all so much for your recommendations! There is a shop nearby that exclusively sells Giant (and they have great reviews as one of the best shops in the area) so I am going to go in tomorrow to see what my options are. We have another shop across the street but it doesn't look like they sell any of the brands you've mentioned above (Bianchi, blue Competition Cycles, Breezer, Brooklyn Bicycle Co, Electra, Fuji, GT, Kestrel, KHS, Kona, Linus, Marin, Orbea, Schwinn & Scott) - although I might stop in to see what they have to recommend.

Bikesdirect.com has several large bikes. I have a 64cm model from them and love it. You do have to assemble them though.

There is a 64 cm version of this model:
Save up to 60% off new Hybrid Bicycles | Road Bikes Cafe Noir
Bit expensive, but you can look at the other models on BD. I've helped a friend assemble his BD bike, and if you aren't too bad with your hands, it is doable. You could also take one to an LBS for assembly.
