It's clear you don't live in either one... Besides the obvious inappropriateness of the response, you did not reckon with the retaliation/escalation factor.
You're on a bike, dude:... even with a .45
Think BIG truck, 12 gauge, bushmaster, friends and cousins who have all been waiting for something to break the monotony. This is also true in many urban parts of the country...

Deja vu all over again.
Another rider bit in Bartow County, Georgia - leg mauled by a pit bull actually.
On a positive note, the owner admitted it was his dog and drove the rider to the hospital.
The attack was unprovoked, meaning the rider did nothing to cause the dog to attack. The rider was simply riding down the road and the dog came out and mauled his leg. The rider will likely need some reconstructive surgery.
Last month I almost crashed because two unrestrained dogs came out. Now a rider is seriously injured. Pepper gel spray is onboard for all of my rides.

a wild dog is nothing more than a coyote in my book.
you can argue dogs are pets, and I'll agree, but pets are not loose, untrained, and aggressive.
thus not all dogs are pets.
I'd site the law on the legality of handling aggressive dogs, but snowflakes don't like the law.

After nearly being killed by an aggressive pitbull type pair of dogs a few years ago I have little sympathy at all for aggressive dogs, big, little, fluffy, cute or whatever, or their owners and am equipped fully for whatever contingency is needed to protect myself. I will not be attacked again and carried off in an ambulance if I have any say in it.

Squirting a dog with ammonia is extremely bad advice.
You will permanently harm the dog and risk injuring yourself or others on the ride. It is the absolute wrong way to deal with dogs.
The correct way to deal with dogs is OC type pepper spray.
Sabre Red Pepper Gel is organic, does no permanent harm to the dog or the environment, wears off completely in four hours and stops the dog cold. I have used it several times and dogs no longer bother cyclists - they won't even come near us. It was recommended to me by animal control officers.
