I loved participating in this crappy game. I saw most of my offerings taken for potential use, put a BoC GB stem right on one of my own bikes, and an FD-6503 from the box is guiding a current parts acquisition/build plan.

Not currently ready, but would happily participate again in the future.

30lbs... I think I pulled something dragging this into my apt! It is staffed full of crap! To the gills!

I've done a preliminary dig through, there's a lot of stuff. I'll be doing a finer sift through and pull my take. I need to at least make room for my donations!

On my first pass I'm most excited for some loose bolts and screws. I've had to leave a bunch of things in Chicago, and not being able to dig into my small fasteners drawer to replace a screw fallen from a rack or fender is super frustrating.

Here's the bike I built with BOC Campy Record crank and BB, Dia Compe brake levers, a cable or two, a recessed nut, and adjusting barrels to replace the frozen-stuck ones I removed from the original brakes with a left-handed drill. That's most of my take! A real parts-bin build, this bike is now being used by a grad student friend of mine to commute between Cambridge and Longwood. Late '80s or early '90s Nishiki Sport frame (double butted but not brand-name tubing), with 700x35 gravelkings and Shimano rear mech shifting 1x7 drivetrain.

With the fenders and everything, it weighs under 25lbs. The now-owner had been complaining that their Breezer Uptown EX was too heavy. I suggested a Masi Speciale Randonneur, but they balked at the weight - reported to be near 30lbs!!. I had this frame, bars, brakes, seat clamp, stem, kickstand, shifter, rear mech, pedals, and wheels in my basement, and the now-owner bought a left crank (Veloce not Record, you can actually tell it's a tiny bit heavier), tires, tubes, brake pads, chain, freewheel, chainring, ti-railed Terry saddle, seatpost, bar tape, and fenders off Ebay. Cost them about $200 in parts (those tires ain't cheap, but they're worth it) and it's way nicer, cheaper, more durable, and lighter than the Cannondale hybrid that the bike shop had been pushing. I did the build in a couple evenings. To be doubly clear, I gave this bike away per BOC rules. The owner only purchased the missing parts from random Ebay sellers and I received no money for the bike or the build.

Campy crank is the prettiest part of the bike. But marred by the backward-installed chainring bolts. I had to do them that way, because of the aftermarket chainring bolts not being quite long enough to make it through the crank and the chainring.


Cork in the seatpost to keep water from getting in the frame through the hole in the saddle. 2018 vintage. Hopefully this will confuse some future bike connoisseur trying to date the thing.

You could have clocked the the slots in the chainring bolts so they were all perpendicular the BB spindle, or radially aligned ;-)

My latest build with some small BoC parts: replacement Winter beater but also a gravel bike. "Retired" my Rockhopper dropbar beater, transferred some parts over to this. Thanks to whoever gave the rainbow stripes decal. Made for some nice bling.

I kinda like this as a way to keep the BoC spirit alive while it naps. Here is my Univega Competizione, which has shifters from the BoC mounted on bar-end pods.

^ Cool. I'll throw this up here. That genuine crap Ultegra 6503 front derailleur came from the box. Forced my hand to hang all the other stuff on there.

I’m embarrassed I held on to it for so long, but I was really wiped out! I missed 4 days of class, had a fever for a couple of those days, I was just exhausted for a while there. 😕

I also made the terrible mistake of looking through the entire box. I don’t know how everything fit in there. I couldn’t fit everything back after an hour of trying.

I did squeeze in some fresh crap, but I have more than I’d intended to take, and couldn’t fit everything I’d wanted to put inside.

Glad you are feeling better! I always pull everything out of the box. That one little part you need is bound to be at the bottom of the box, right? I have gotten pretty good at putting it back as well, though I struggled my first time for sure! Its all part of the fun, right?

This. When I worked in the airline business, my trainer told me it's just like Tetris, pack that bin like it. Learned from that and even took it into my job as a FedEx Express driver as we load our own trucks. Easy peasy and fun.

When I was a kid I was always in charge of making our families luggage fit in the trunk. I’ve done a lot of camping and hiking, traveled to S. America, Packed through Europe, and yes, even played Tetris!

I think I was defeated by two things. Firstly, the nature of bike parts is lots of bits sticking out at all angles. Nothing is squared off. Secondly, when the box arrived at my door it had relaxed into more of a bag shape 😂
I used a new box and reinforced it internally with some cardboard, in addition to the plastic that was in place. I think having rigid sides made things more complicated.

BUT in the future I’ll attack it more like a puzzle.
You guys have some incredible crap loading skills, my hat’s off to you!
