Your Weekend Ride Reports -- June 27/28

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday ...

Rowan has just had hernia surgery so he isn't supposed to do much exercise but they recommend short walks so we went for a nice casual flat walk at a beach 34 km away from home. That's the first time we've been that far from home in months!! It was cool but sunny.

When we came home, I did a 16 minute row on my rowing machine. And finally, I did a half-hour run on my treadmill.

7 Mile Beach Walk: 43:08 min | 2.61 km

Evening Row: 16:08 min | 2,554 m

Zwift: Run!: 35:57 min | 4.10 km

I did 45 miles on my Sunday ride! It felt good . When I got home my Strava had kind of wigged out and only recorded 30 miles of the ride and it showed me going right through the middle of an orchard! The first time my Strava screwed up and it was one of my best rides ever. Oh well, I don’t need Strava to tell me it was a fantastic ride.

Woke up early Saturday and Sunday for a 3:10am and 3:30am early rides. Probably the earliest I could ever comfortably get going, would be hard to wake up earlier. Put in a 56 and 80 mile rides.

Not much riding for me this weekend. I was busy with work and other things. But, I did get out for a 90 minute ride early Saturday. The temp was 62°F when I left my house at 5:30AM and 41°F at the top of the North Fork 1 hour later. Fortunately I was dressed for it, but I saw other riders that were only wearing a jersey and bibs--burrr!

Long ride to the beach on Sunday. The first half of the route was hilly, then mostly flat on the way back. McDonald's snack mid-point before heading back. Started off too hard though, legs hurting on the way back. Woke up with some sore muscles today

I just realized I've ridden at least 20 miles a day for the past week without a break. I think I'll take a rest day or so, since we're due for rain this week. But it's tempting to keep riding when the state and city have admitted they re-opened too recklessly in May and COVID-19 cases have spiked. Shutting down the bars may be bad for business but it's good for cycling, jogging and walking -- less traffic along some routes.

Friday: 33 miles, my first casual ride on my hybrid in a couple of months, just puttering around a mix of roads and a few MUP segments to see what's what. I haven't ridden the MUP since March when the pandemic precautions began. Friends who use the MUP almost exclusively have been talking (often complaining) about how crowded it's gotten, and how so-and-so isn't riding/walking/jogging/standing correctly. Too much drama. I have plenty of rural roads to ride. But I was curious Friday and figured there'd be few or no people around since the governor just ordered all bars to shut down again. I might have seen half a dozen people, mostly couples walking together, over the 10-15 miles I pedaled around the MUP.

Saturday: 21 miles, mostly doing hill repeats and intervals. Kept it fairly short since I took only one water bottle and stayed close to home. Brutal but I needed it. I've avoided serious workouts for a couple of months and felt kinda stale.

Sunday: 38 miles, mostly recovery effort. It's hard to find any route that doesn't demand at least one or two sprints to merge safely with traffic, but Sunday wasn't bad.

Saturday i took a short but hard ride, attacking the one hill available to me.
On Sunday, I invoked rule #9 and rule #5 . I dont know what the wind was, but all I can tell you was that it took 220 watts to get UP to 10 MPH! it was brutal. add in the BIG dogs that decided to chase me when I couldn't get over 10...I got dog slobber on my calf.. going the other way, I was going 28 MPH when I passed them! I was well past before they even noticed me. in the back of my head i was hoping they would run out into the road and get hit by traffic. I started smelling smoke as my ride got to the turn around, and now there is a fire in the nearby pass (the news said 40-50 MPH winds... not a good omen for fire season.

Girlfriend got her N+1 on Friday (first road bike ever). We landed on a great deal on a 2018 leftover; a brand new Liv Avail Advanced 2.

Saturday: I did a 50k ride up in the hills, then we did a 10k together after she spent an hour practicing in an empty parking lot.
Sunday: We did a 25k together. Slow pace, but it was nice. Surprisingly, she is a very good climber.

Tuesday I did an evening ride in S. Tampa. Damn hot. The heat advisory was in triple digits. Sunday I was back in the Ocala Nat. forest. Still pretty hot, but got in a nice 42 mile ride.

Saturday. Wanted to do 71. Bonked at 56. Couldn't figure out what happened. I did the math on my calorie intake, only 560. Oops. First time bonking.
