Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rowan and my activity has died off recently.

He had hernia surgery and is recovering quite well from that after a small glitch when he had an allergic reaction to the bandaging.

Last weekend I had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction to correct my badly deviated septum and improve my air flow. I've had a rough week with it but am starting to feel better. I get the splints out on Monday.

So we'll probably take it easy this weekend. It's chilly and threatening rain anyway.

Good to get these things done in the middle of winter.

Sunday -- we did a 0.7 km walk today. First walk since my surgery!

Never felt worse than the last 5km up to here. I had nothing left, above 2000m, it became cold and I am pretty sure I lost some control of my bladder.

Got a late start today. 10:00, which means more wind to deal with. A bit slow the first twenty or so miles but got in a better groove later. Ended up with 85 miles at 16.3 average.

Got in 21 miles of rail trail riding on the Washington and Old Dominion Rail Trail, then 2 miles of climbing to take the shot below of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Of course, then 2 miles downhill and 21 miles back - a nice ride that mostly beat the heat and the crowds.

Short writeup here.

Another hot ride on Tuesday to Picnic Is. for 32 miles. I was back in Ocala Nat. forest. for the weekend. I'm trying a new strategy to ride harder for shorter miles to beat the heat. Saturday I went for 32 miles. Sunday I picked a little hillier route for 35 miles. On both days the rides ended at the springs for a refreshing dip.

I've been focused on really early rides lately, setting a goal of 3am starts. I have the alarm set to 2am, but for the last couple of attempts the start time has been 3:30. Super difficult but worth it! I got a 50 and 70 mile ride in this weekend.

There's a special kind of magic riding past a meadow as the birds wakeup

I usually ride 40 miles or so but only did 22 miles on Sunday. It was really damp and muggy with drizzle . I had to stoop frequently to clean my glasses. I am going to make up ride this week at lunch.

Both sets of road bike rear wheels developed cracked rims last week, and neck/back spasms sidelined me, so I took only one casual road ride on my hybrid with albatross swept bars Saturday for a nice 32 mile ride. I need to ride that bike more often. I'm always surprised how not-slow it is considering how comfy it is. Heavy, fatter tires, not aero, but very pleasant to ride when the neck and back are griping. Did another 30+ miles Monday on the same bike.

107mi/6800ft; SF to Mill Valley, over to Stinson Beach, hwy 1 north to Point Reyes, had planned to ride out to Drake's Beach but the road was beyond awful and actually unrideable. Flooding, huge holes, cavities, cracks, slides, a complete mess. I gave up and turned around about halfway out to Drake's Beach from Seahaven. Home via Point Reyes Station, Nicasio, Fairfax and Mill Valley/Sausalito back to SF. Nice day out. Fair amount of traffic.
