Nishiki Tri-A
Just got a Nishiki Tri-A for $250 - Bike looks in great shape and looks all original including the tires (made in Japan, 700x23c), wheels from Araya with 36 spokes, all Shimano 600 groupset. Good deal/not so good deal?

Nice ride. Based on your description, original everthing, you paid fmv. Fresh tires and an overhaul of bearings will be needed.

$250 for a Tri in really nice shape is spot on. Maybe up to $300 if it's being sold in a college town

That's a really sweet looking ride. Tange 1 tubing is the real deal steel. $250 is a reasonable price for that. Please be sure to put new tires on it. You don't want to be flying down a steep hill at 35mph with old tires. Be good. Have fun.

Wow, that is so sweet looking. Good components too. I'd say you did ok on the deal, fair price to me. Tange 1 is quality stuff and so are those Shimano 600 components.

Most important is does it fit you? Assume you wouldn't have bought it otherwise. You can learn a lot about maintenance here on the forum or on the web. Park Tools has some helpful videos and so does youtube if you can sift through some of the nonsense.

Yes, bike is my size and was a finding after some 5 months looking around in CL.
Just out of curiosity I compared the weight of my Tommaso and Tri-A. Tri-A came ahead by 2 at 24 lbs.
Looking forward for this season - I am not much of a rainy day rider

I often choose things based on function and what looks right to me. @oddjob2 is totally correct with this bike- and I'm not so sure that mounting on the dropout is exactly safe.
Congratulations on finding a really nice bike in your size- it can't be easy to find bikes of this quality at this size. It's a really cool bike and in great shape! Great period components- among the best for it's day. And Tange 1 is top of the line tubing. In regards to your other thread- I would ride this as objectively as possible- if there's something you really don't like about it- change it. IMO- most anything you can replace can usually be found with some sort of "classic" aesthetic. IMO- black, plastic-y, swoopy components don't belong on a bike of this classiness.

Cool bike.
I had a 1986 Tri A that I used for RAGBRAI in 2012.
The bike rode nice and had a good feel. I got another steel bike 86 Schwinn Paramount that I like more and gave the Tri A to my nephew who used it as a commuter in college He took it from the Mexican Border to Portland the summer he graduated on a road trip.
The bike is still with him and still rides sweet.
It is a solid comfortable bike I think well worth the 250 which is close to the same price I bought mine for

Just following up on your post about internal rust. Now that I see the condition of the outside of the bike, you'll be fine! This is a great score for $250. As others have noted, a complete bike with Shimano 600 and Tange #1 tubing is a great, great find.
Also as others have noted - remove the rack. It's not safe being attached to the rear dropout like that. If you want fenders, you could always use the Axiom fender mounts for quick release wheels (where the frame has no braze on mounts).

Finally got it all finished and took my maiden voyage today
Updated to all 105 5800 silver group set, H+Son Archetype with conti GP4SII, Soma 38 cm handlebar and Selle Italia from other bike.

I have to be getting close to the 10 post count so I can post my Nishiki Tri A that I recently acquired, but I have some questions I was hoping some others could answer...
Are Araya Gold wheels durable and reliably road worthy? I have a set of velocity deep v wheels with 36h 105 5800 hubs on my Raleigh, and I LOVE them. My rear cassette on the Nishiki is 6 speed, if I explore new wheels, am I looking at getting a new group set as well? Are 9 speed free hubs “backwards compatible” with 6 speed cassettes?

Wowie that stem is way too high even if a nice extended + 1 on the seat post I would consider the current setup unsafe. If this is your setup for daily riding the bike is way too small and you should seriously consider getting a different bike a size or two larger that you can put the new parts on then maybe put this one back as stock to sell.
