Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey, those look good. I sure will ask about those, they look like they are better quality also.

They probably upgraded to these due to poor stopping complaints...... I would see what your LBS can do for you. Most good shops will help a customer out, I know mine does.

They look like an older version of the R540s to me. but they don't have a quick release anywhere? https://www.tektro.com/_english/01_pr...e&sort=1&fid=2

The quick release is on the right side, there is a real short lever. That looks like them in that link you posted. I don`t care for them much.

Yeah, I am pretty sure those are the same brakes on my Allez. They work, but definitely not as well at the R741's on my Carbon bike. Now those are some really nice stopping Tektro brakes, the R741's. I found they stop better than the 105 brakes and were less than half the weight.

My brakes on my 2009 Synapse 5 AL are Tektra 538's. They stop just fine. It was the last item I cared about swapping when I did my total 6700 make over. I only bought 6700 brakes bacause it was the only thing left on my bike that wasn't 6700. As it turned out my 538's were long reach and the 6700's were a short reach brake so I couldn't use them. The 6700's did fit on the 2008 Synapse frame I built up for my wife. So she got my new brakes. I am not sure what determines long vs short reach but her bike does have a non-Cannondale fork on it.

I have the stock black Tektro R580's on my Synapse and they are surprisingly good. Now, the Tektros that came with my Jamis were horrible.

The higher end Tektros actually come with KoolStop pads...the lower end OEM versions don't. Switch the pads out to Koolstop and it should solve all brake related stopping issues.

Is it possible that tektro is inconsistant in their moulding process. Are some of them softer more flexy metal. Bad run of brakes possible? Anyways i just ordered shimano r650 brake i will report back when i get them

Am I the only one that the screws are rusting on my Tektro brakes? They came on my 2010 Synapse alloy6. I got the bike back in febuary on a closeout deal. It looks like my brakes have R316 on them. My bike was a lower end bike so I guess they put lower end brakes on it. The Tektro brakes on my Caad 10 look different (better) and stop alot better. I think I will try and get some like Capecodder has or something simular.

it's actually pretty easy to fit today's short reach brakes on your Synapse. All you need is a metal file/gradual metal remover from any hardware/home improvement store. I fitted SRAM Red brakes on my 2013 Synapse 5 105.

the stock tekro r539s are unacceptable

I have a 2012 Synapse 5 and I find the stock tektros fine. It's important to mention that I haven't used anything better but they have gotten the job done for me so far.

I also have a 2012 Synapse 5-105 Alloy and don't have issues with the Tektro R539 brakes. I'll put better pads on it when these wear down more, but they work just fine for me. The stock tires, on the other hand .... pfffft. They'll be history come better weather, but for now they'll suffice.

Shimano R450 have a reach range of 47-57mm like the stock Tektro calipers. These are Tiagra quality level.
