Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

front wheel advise

just got delivered a rear 36 spoke deep v with ultegra hub and double butted spokes. Thought i would order the front if i liked the rear.

Im 230 never had a problem with fronts on any wheelset. But have had problems keeping rear wheels true.

question is the rear is overkill and heavy for my weight but im ok with that. but i was thinking of going with a velocity fusion 28 or 32 on the front to save weight and be less deep for sidewinds.

Would it be ok to do have the 25mm depth fusions on the front and a 30mm deep deep v on the back

if i ever broke a spoke on a 28 would i make it home the same as a 32 spoke

The fusion really isn't a great rim. Stick with something stronger. Deep V rim is heavy. To keep in the same width and depth I'd recommend going with an Kinlin XR300 in a 28 on the front.

As for keeping the rear true on other builds - as you have discovered it is partly the spoke count and partly the incorrect tension balance and build quality. Your current rear is slight overkill for your weight, but if the build quality is good it will last for a long-long time. Enjoy.

I doubt the weight of 4 or 8 spokes will hold you back. I think a bit of extra strength is worth it.

There's something to be said for wheels just working. I got over my ludicrous desire to have light wheels a while ago, it's not holding me back.

Are mismatched wheels going to bug you?

I'd have no qualms about putting you on a Fusion. I'd probably go with the 32H to be safe (I favor higher spoke count wheels for my own bikes), but really if a 28H is properly built and tensioned with quality spokes, a 28H should be fine too. Up front, your risk of breaking spokes is fairly low, the rear is usually where it's going to happen with all the torque coming through the drivetrain.

For what it's worth, I built a few sets of Fusions a long time before I worked for Velocity for both myself and friends, and they've held up great. I'm around 160-70lbs, but have abused the hell out of them with no complaints.

thanks for the replys. Im leaning towards a deep v in the front and a velocity or white t11 hub to save a little weight.
