Touring-to-Gravel Bike Buildup
I've officially joined the gravel-bike ranks. Earlier this summer, I decided to try to build up a gravel grinder from a 1999 Trek 520 steel touring frame I had lying around. It turned out to be a great learning experience. I'm not a seasoned bike mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but thanks to the modern miracle of internet research and video tutorials, I got it finished. Today I took it on an 11-mile test ride, during which I took the photo displayed below.
I tried to do the build "on the cheap," but still had to spring for a new wheelset, tires, crankset, handlebar riser, handlebars, brake levers, cables, brakes and chain. While it wasn't exactly cheap, it certainly was rewarding.
The vital statistics: Trek 520 frame, Deore LX old-school MTB triple crankset (48-36-26), Deore XT rear mech, 105 front mech, 11-34 cassette, Velocity A23 rims and Panaracer Gravel King tires:
