Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Years Cycling Resolutions...

So with the new year rapidly approaching, what cycling resolutions are you laying down -- if any? Here are mine:
  • Complete a metric century by my birthday (March 8)
  • Complete a full century by the end of the year
  • Ride enough to continue weight loss to approximately 215 lbs.

  • Ride 5000 miles
  • Lose 5 lbs. (any combination of myself or my bike)
  • Climb Old San Marcos in less than 20 minutes (3 miles, 1200 foot elevation gain)

Bonus points if I wear out components on my bike for an excuse to get new/better/lighter ones.

Oooh, that's a good one that I'd love to do as well. But, alas and alack, I do not have a fixie and after all the money I spent on bike stuff in '05, I think my wife will kill me if I bring another bike into the house anytime soon.

I did ~900 miles this season (a fair bit of that on a mountain bike or a 32lb Schwinn) and want to hit 1500+ next.

Oh, and finish my Gazelle. 531 lugged steel. Yum.

Lost ten pounds by april 1st

Increase my core strength (alot)

Do STP in one day with my bikeforums brethren, and be able to take nice long strong pulls.

Do Larch Mountain twice in one day. First slow and conservative. Second time... 100% of sustainable effort the whole way.

Do Torture 10,000 faster than last year, and hopefully feel better at the end.

Be in the best shape of my life.

See Jan win the tour

  • Get up at 4 AM and ride 14 miles and 1,600 feet of elevation gain to work every day, rain or shine. Hopefully, I'll find my motivation.
  • Lose 40 lbs fat
  • Gain 20+ lbs or more of muscle
  • Get my % body fat < 10%
  • Ride a two-week summer tour, solo or with a group
  • Commute a lot more with my bike

In 2005, I will exceed 1,800 miles. For 2006, I would like to hit at least 2,200 miles, which is the shortest distance across the continental United States -- San Diego to Charleston, SC. So I can say I rode across the U.S. in one year. I also would like to do at least one true century in 2006.
In 2005, I rode 200 days out of 365. About 9 miles per ride. 1,000 miles of this was in a subdivision near my house, where I ride a 4/10ths mile loop which has a pretty steep hill.

I don't really believe in resolutions but I do have some goals.

First I will win a race this year.

Second I will try to stay out of threads that turn into verbal fist fights. This last week I was taught a ton by several members here, divekrb and lotek, to name two and I wish I saw more of that type thing going on here. So I for one am going to do my best to keep out of the fray.

Gawwwd, I love your animated signature! Keep waiting for that punk-a$$ed McEwen to do that.

Mine:
* Drop 20 more before Paris-Roubaix (ya never know...Tom might need a lead-out)
* Wear out at least two sets of Gatorskin 23's.
* Tandem the Shiner ride with my best stoker, then talk her into some REAL BBQ for a change.
* 320 bike rides MINIMUM.
* Miss the RFTR because my best stoker and I are riding in Spain...

Race as often as reasonable without neglecting my familial responsibilities.
Build up a trailer-haulin', grocery-gettin', Tahoe-capable bomber.
Get down to 165lbs and 8% bf.
Never pass up the opportunity to ride my bike.
Share the love.

Ride until someone notices my non-talent and signs me to a contract and gives me several thousand dollar bikes for free and a commercial deal along with maybe a Chunky Soup commercial........I like the chili for my commercial! Oh yeah, just to be noticed by cars on the road.
