Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Those are the college days. They're long gone, one dinner is plenty once you near 30.

The best Christmas Mrs. LAJ and I have are the ones where we don't go anywhere. We made that decision a few years ago, and it was one of the best we've made. Don't get me wrong, I love this time of the year, but when the final crescendo is a tension filled, rushed bunch of family gatherings, we finally passed.

This is often considered in the context of refusal to buy health insurance, risky behaviors, etc. Aside from the widespread social consensus that we offer medical assistance to those in need and ask questions afterward, there is unanimous agreement among ethicists that it cannot be done. In the context of an infectious disease, it also puts the society at greater risk.

There are, however, limits. My first encounter with them was when I was a neurology resident and the cardiac surgeons turned down my heroin addict stroke patient for his third valve replacement, necessitated by his ongoing use of dirty needles. They were right, of course, there being plenty of other indigent patients in need of their services, but it still came as a shock to me and my patient.

People are stupid.

We had an In and Out in Vegas one time. As we were waiting in the drive through line, we watched a rat as big as a cat wander into the storage building they had. The burger was a definite letdown.

The health insurance issue is textured by price. And that brings up the question of price with the vaccine - who's paying? Is it taxpayer-footed? How are we tracking the double-dosing, and what do we do with people who take the first but not the second? It's a whole icky bundle.

My preference for antivaxxers is to allow them to not vaccinate, but then to exclude them from various things society offers, like schools for their children, for example. Sure, you can leave your children unvaccinated! But they can't come to public schools. And any employer should be allowed to deny them employment - after all, they threaten the health of the non-crazy workforce. Your right to swing your arms ends at my face.

Personally, I prefer 5 Guys. In-N-Out burgers are okay, but nothing to write home about. Their fries are inferior to 5Guys, plus 5Guys practically buries you in the damn things.

Man I miss Five Guys.

Been a while since I posted this:

That is a lump of deep-fried chocolate ice cream. On a burger. I miss that too.

Went for a nice bike ride this morning. Thought I'd try one of the easier local hills. It was a painful fail. I had to stop twice to get my heartrate down. And had to walk the last bit to the top. At least the decent was lots of fun.

We've always had In-n-Out here. I never understood the appeal. The burgers are ok but there are better burgers around. Their fries suck. I haven't been there in over a year.

There was no Twitter to document it, but when Krispy Kreme arrived in MN, there was a similar, dumb reaction. It got to the point that the drive-through line got backed up, out of the parking lot, down the street and down the freeway exit ramp.

Posed the question to my social worker wife. Her response was something about being a heartless ass. 😉

I took a nap as the sun was setting, and am back at it again. Only 18 more hours to go until daylight.

We're actually looking forward to our first Thanksgiving in MN at home. In Brooklyn, we always made way too much food for ourselves and the 1-3 building neighbors that would drop in. It was a lot of work, but we enjoyed ourselves. Since returning to MN, we've been guests each year, often with visits to both sides of the family. It's fine, but it's not the same and this is a good excuse for the change of pace.

Oh, and speaking of the holidays, maaaannn - LAJ is not alone, there are a lot of people with Christmas lights up already. I picked up dinner and was surprised by the number of houses lit up on the drive home.

We had craziness here when Krispy Kreme came out. I never tried but I'm sure I could inhale a dozen of them in a couple minutes. After the boom died out a bunch of them closed.
Years ago I worked near a family run shop that had apple crullers that I lived for.
