I'll be picking up my '84 520 this evening. I've been saving this set of brakes to try on it. They have some adjustment and I can dremmel a bit if I need to. If that doesn't work I'd be interested in how you removed your canti mounts.

Had I found those Pasalas (1 1/4) when I was doing these builds (2006-2008) I think I would have kept the 27 inch wheels. But I could not find anything like that at the time.

exhibit 2:

exhibit 3:
I had the exact same set up as on the Univega and the force and direction of the brake shoes on the rims is down and in. I don't know hot to describe it exactly but the brake is designed to up and to the center and when you move the angle so far down it wants to push more down than against the rim.

It seems like a better solution in the second pic, adjusting the pads down seems to move the cantis to a wider style. I wonder how the springs like that.

I can't tell on the third but it looks good, though on both the second and third, I wonder if you can get a better response from the cantis using mtb style brake levers and the extra force from the lever helps with the mis-aligned pads?

I'm glad you found a way to make it work, my point is that it is not a simple switch and works against the design of the brakes.

couldn't something like this be used with the stock canti bosses when going from a 27" to 700c wheel?

I actually have a set of them on a Trek 7300 Multi-Track in the garage. I guess I can pull them off and try it this weekend.

Having pulled the 700c wheel off my 7300 last night I now have a better understanding for the problem.

Out of curiosity. Shouldn't a frame Builder be able to perhaps remove the bosses, and then re-attach them a half inch or so lower? That'd leave you with a frame that looks original, or nearly, but also allow you to mount 700c wheels?

sure can. i eventually did this to my miyata 1000 above because i was having other stuff done to it too.

you can actually take any old frame and throw some canti bosses on them. however, this requires a repaint. i just did this to another frame with 27" wheels and no original cantis.
