1 Going NY to San Francisco.
Dear members,
Reading you for about two years gathering information and in the last months posting and asking for help to solve last minute questions was amazing! You guys helped me to have a solid foundation to set up my ride.
Now I standing here, everything is new and at the same time I know something about it, because the people in this little digital space is so awesome and passionate about sharing the experiences and knowledge!

Looks like quite an adventure, my longest solo tour was Modesto to San Diego.

Hostel at Ft Mason when you get there may be the only* affordable place left in a city with runaway housing costs ,
call and reserve a bunk. or room to yourself..

Maybe, but aluminum frame saves some weight & I assume the camping gear is nice lightweight stuff also. Cross-USA is a long way, extra stuff can sometimes save time or be more convenient. I think a strong rider would be able to handle the hills OK with that setup. Would be interesting to see the packing list.

He may be snow riding for a while from the east coast, and again in Colorado , and going over the Donner Summit once in California.
warm stuff is bulky.
I started a tour in Ireland in February, experienced the warming effect of the ocean gulf stream, and mailed a lot home the next day.

Alu frame can save a bit more weight than that though yes, the luggage weight rather swamps that bit. I'd have a tough time on the hills but in the olden days I think it would have been fairly tolerable. There's lots of things that some or most tourists wouldn't want to take but might be important to others: tablet, camera gear, hiking shoes, maybe even dress clothes & shoes.
