Fat Bike mixed surface tires
Have surly Bud/Lou but will be taking my fat bike on a mixed surface 200mile bikepacking tour with ~60 miles being on pavement. I really dont need the traction that the Bud/Lou provide during the off road portion as I can use a less aggressive tire. Should I purchase a tire more designed for mixed surface, like a Surly Knard? Also, will a 60tpi tire take longer to wear than a 120tpi tire? lots of odd information on the net regarding tpi.

I've run Origin 8 Tsunami 4.9's for the past 4 months on sand, snow, and rocky trails. They have worked out very well, easily set up tubeless.
Zero flats.

I run Vee Tire Co Speedsters on pave/gravel. 25-30 psi on pave, 10-15 on gravel (depending on roughness). Very good results. 120 tpi, 3” wide.

2nd vote for the Schwalbe Jumbo Jims - I'd recommend the Snake Skin version set up tubeless. 4" width ought to be wide enough? They really do roll well.

Anyone use the Knard 4.8? from the pix it looks like the tread is less aggressive than the Jumob Jims. I have read great reviews about the Knards.

I would think the 4.8s would be sluggish on the road as my 4.8 JJs were awful but love the JJ 4.0. I have the 3" knards and they were great!

edit - forgot to answer the tpi questions... I'm defaulting to 120 tpi, I've found the more supple tires roll better and less issues with tire-steer.
This was the 2017 Filthy 50, I was able to finish in 2:57 (17.6 mph ave speed). I was 4th place in the Fatbike division, and the riders ahead of me were all on lighter CF bikes.
I've brought the Pug to WNCX races, and these tires are great on the grass
Finally, this was my birthday ride last July: 140 miles, solo & unsupported riding mostly gravel, with a mix of pavement, limestone, single-track MTB trails, and unmowed snowmobile trails.

My Pugsley came with Nates, way too much traction for any riding I do. I got the Panaracer Fat-B-Nimble for gravel endurance rides, and they're great on most conditions (not on snow... they're terrible on snow). I have a buddy that fatbikes gravel races with me that really likes the Knards, so that's not a bad choice either.
