Giro d'Italia 2019

Starts in six days time and already the predictions have been upset with yesterday's announcement from Team Ineos that Egan Bernal sustained a broken collar bone in training and is out of this year's Giro.

So who's left Dumoulin, Nibali, Yates (Simon), Roglic**********??

Really bummed Egan had the accident. I was looking forward to his performance!

I'm cheering for Nibali, but wouldn't mind if Yates or Rogilic win. Assuming Rogilic is riding the Giro.

Roglic looked strong in the Tour of Romandie. I assumed he was going to the Giro based on commentators. My wife is going to be in Italy for part of the Giro, but they are mostly south and the route seems more northern Italy. I asked her to find me a Giro t-shirt.

He certainly is and I see it as between Roglic, Yates and Dumoulin with Nibali as the outside chance.

Do you mean the Amstel Gold winner Van der Poel? If so the answer is no. Not a rider for the GTs or riding for a team that's likely to be in one.

Yes

I gotcha. That’s what I thought. I’d love to see him out there in the Giro or TDF.

It'll be interesting to see if/how the Ineos strategy changes with Egan out and a couple of younger riders in the lead roles (not that Egan isn't young). I'm looking forward to a very competitive race!

^me too. looks like we'll hafta wait for week three for the real fireworks but there will undoubtedly be some monkey wrenches thrown
in before the big mountains with the usual illnesses, crashes, dq's, drafting penalties, fan"interaction," unwanted motorbike involvement, et al...

Kind of strange with most the main GC guys going early and then a long wait for Yates to go 3rd from the end. Only mishap was a rider dropping his chain on the turn for the climb and nearly taking out the guy who was about to overtake.

Fubo's feed (which I assume is Italian TV) was spotty for the first two thirds of the race then they got it sorted out.
My wife and I pick who we think will win and get points depending on how they place. She picked Yates and I picked Roglic so a good start.
It was a beautiful place for the first stage.

Click for stage 2 result. 2019 Giro d'Italia Live Video, Preview, Startlist, Route, Results, Photos, TV

Ciccone (TFS) Hoovering up the KOM points in the breakaway. Touch of wheels brings down 2 Movistar domestiques on the final climb. Always going to be a sprint finish barring accidents. Big sprint for the line and think only one rider from Lotto(?) involved in a fall at the last turn.

Stage 4 results; 2019 Giro d'Italia Live Video, Preview, Startlist, Route, Results, Photos, TV

Big crash at 6.5kms to go. Dumoulin the big loser and I think may drop out and concentrate on the TdF.

That is such a shame. He really loves the Giro and I was rooting for him to win it.

Not sure if he will drop out, the Giro course suits him much better. But he already lost 4 minutes, so unlikely that he will still be in contention.

I guess focusing on the Tour would be more sensible for him now.

Dumoulin 'abandons'.

Started stage 5 but with the lost time and an injury to his knee this is no surprise. The wet conditions today won't have helped either.
