funky wheel lacing?

https://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...4&d=1411462593

I just saw this and it looked strange to me. Is there a benefit to sub-tangent lacing?

And it's only the leading spokes that are like that. Trailing spokes are normal. Maybe use up some longer spokes? or an advantage that exists only in the mind of whomever did it?

They used the spokes they had on hand. ??

why do people ask the motivations of someone else's designs or choices here, so often?

spokes crossing the heads of other spokes is a very bad idea.
They will stress and break in short order.

There is math to determine the max crossing for a given number of holes.

But what do I know.

So I wanted to find out if my thought was shared.

I have built A 48 spoke rear wheel 5 cross . toured Europe several times , over a decade on them ..
self contained , solo..

Did you buy the wheel in question? No? why mettle. You should be working instead..

Why have a forum.

Someone did something off of the beaten path deliberately. I wasn't asking why they let their juvenile son get his nose pierced. I wanted to know if there is a mechanical advantage to doing something that common knowledge would indicate is a guaranteed failure, especially as the styling advantage is nearly non-existent.

And everyone was so impressed that you topped 40k posts. Take your own advice.

OP asked a question about something he was curious about. Nothing wrong with that.

Is it not a normal cross-3 lacing pattern? It gives a more relaxed ride and I wouldn't expect to see it on what appears to be a track bike.

Look more closely. The spokes leading spokes (heads in) are at a different angle than the trailing spokes (heads out).
