UPgrading cranks- overkill for single speed urban commuting?

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Lowcell is an all around good egg, who happens to make some really good salsa.

Got to remember 144 is the old campy standard as well. On my 930, I have a set of Sugino Mighty Comps with 52/39 gearing, So if you want an easier gearing on a 144 bcd, just scrounge around the older bikeshops in your area, depending on the shop they are bound to have a 39 in a 144 bcd laying around.

42T is the smallest size chainring that will fit on a 144 bcd crank, although TA and some others have made 41T rings that will work. I have several old Sugino Mighty Comps, and they are indeed 144 bcd as you say, but a 39T is a no go. Are you sure you're not confusing them with a 130 bcd crank?

They are indeed 144 bcd measured the bcd when I was sizing things up for it's new drivetrain, maybe a one off chain ring perhaps in my case.

I'd go 130 for the gear selection.

I don't see how. A custom 41T barely clears the spider, and in fact some chains will hang up if the spider isn't filed down almost to the bolt hole. The diameter of a 39T would be too small. What is the c-c distance between adjacent bolt holes?

I'll have to recount the inner ring, possible it could be a 42, I've been known to miscount chainring teeth. It is a 144 crank being that I put a fresh outer ring on the 930 last week and the 144 fit perfectly. And will take pics of said chainring in the case that it is a 39.

here's a feel of your typical Paris ride, from Mission Workshop promotional video
all the clichés are in: montmartre, cobblestone, café break, demonstrators, ...

great bag too (not a shareholder...)

my one critique of the MW vids was that they were too short.

What's more important

The chainring and bottom bracket are more important than the cranks. Yes, Campys and Sugino 75s look cool, but if you use them with a cheap BB or chainring, you've wasted your money.
