Boats and Junk

Video highlights from my ride into the office yesterday.

As you can see, the detritus from the homeless camps along the Sand Creek Trail has been growing.

Eventually the city of Colorado Springs will clear out the camps and clean up the resulting mess. They've done it before along this and other trails and other camps.

I feel bad for the homeless. Times are tough, and public housing for the indigent is scarce with a dearth of services.

However, in our dry Colorado climate these camps pose a fire danger, with blazes springing up time and rime again.

There is also the problem with the water in this and other creeks. Just as in third-world countries, there is danger in using the same water for bathing, defecating, drinking and cooking.

The waterways in Colorado Springs combine and flow south to Pueblo, Colorado. In theory, the city's waste water is treated before being released into Fountain Creek. In practice, the untreated waste from the camps (as well as storm overflow) have cost Colorado Springs hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for water that doesn't meet safety levels.

I don't know what a workable solution is to the homeless problem.
