Picked this up last week . wondering if anyone has any info on the company or a guess on the year. Serial # S2G6266 on the bottum bracket. Araya arims with shimano VIA hubs have a GC on them. 6 speed freewheel. Tourney St cranks. SR sp-152 pedels. Shimano tourney brakes with Dee50 levers. Top tube says cro-mo 400, seat tube sticker says Champion no.5 seamless Pc tange industries. bars say Alps industrial company japan, Road campion bars . So now lets try some photos, always have trouble with this part.

I take it the GC is the date code on the hubs

G is the year- which according to vintage-trek.com is 1982
C is the month- March

so 1982 ish would be my best guess

That headbadge would look a lot cooler if you didn't let your camera focus on the rear of the bike.

It looks like a beautiful find though.

You gotta use focus lock and macro if you're taking pictures so close to the object! Otherwise, it appears to be a fuzzy nice bike

Very nice find. The paint looks beautiful. If that's your size, it looks like a keeper to me. I like Shoguns. I think they made very nice frames, like your Champion #5. IMHO, they are an underrated manufacturer.

I can't recall East Hill ever criticizing someone's photography, unless they didn't have any. Even then, it would only be a polite reminder.

The rear derailleur is a Shimano New 600EX, suggesting the bicycle is no older than 1984. However, this would appear to be a replacement as the serial number is a standard foramt indicating 1982, as previously suggested. Also, by 1984 frame had been upgraded to butted main tubes.

Shogun was a relatively small brand. While they were around in the early 1980s, their peak was the late 1980s. The 400 is the model number. Shogun from this period used model numbers, as opposed to names, with higher numbers representing higher models. The top model from this era was the 3000. I'm also aware of 2001, 1000, 600, 550 and 300 models from this period. What you have is an upper, entry level model, with an original price of about $200-$225 US.

thanks for the help on the fuzzy photos. the shimano 600 stuff i put on also had the freewheel hub rebuild and put on a new shimano 600 freewheel. there was a shimano altus on the back and a cheap sun tour on the front. The paint has a couple nicks but shines real nice. I took off the tread cleaners and put on shortie fenders. Thinking about trying the bike commute to work , about 6 miles.

I just found a Shogun 300 in the trash and I am currently tearing it down for a rebuild. I do not know much about them either. I will be posting pictures on this thread later today.

My first decent bike was a Shogun 300 from the mid 80's which I still ride today. They seem to have been popular in the Northeast at that time as you see a lot of them from that era in these parts. Over the years I have updated many of the components. Mine has double butted chromoly three main tubes with a Tangaloy (?) fork. I still like way it rides. A very good value imho since I am sure this model did not sell for more than $200.00 at that time. I have posted a few pictures of mine below. If you do a forum search for Shogun you will see few threads as several us our fans of the brand. Good luck with yours.

joychri, I have the identical Shogun 300. Except mine looks a little different because it was run over by a truck, no really! The drive side stay was slightly bent and the rear rim was destroyed. I had a guy who works on motorcycles straighten the stay. The frame is sitting in my bike work area waiting for me to decide if I should restore it. I think I'll print out the pic of yours as motivation, that bike is beautiful.

Odd you should mention this, as I was talking to an old-time bike shop owner on the Cape who used to be a Shogun distributor. He commented on the hand pin striping and lug lining.
There's a slightly later 400 out in the barn waiting for my elder daughter to grow into it. The paint isn't as nice as that on the OPs bike.

I've owned a Shogun Touring bike since 1978,bought it new.Don't know the model(removed stickers 30 years ago)but came with SR seat post,handlebar post and triple crank(52-42-32).Shimano 600 hubs,derailers and brakes,with ARAYA rims.It has triple butted Cro-Mo main tubes and Cro-Mo seat/chain stays and fork.Came with forged dropouts also.Mine does not have that fancy badge on the headtube.Paid $450.00 for it in 1978 dollars,good chunk of change back then.I think Schwinn Conti was about $150 back then IIRC.

That's about all I know about them,and I wouldn't trade it for any bike,rides like a dream.

Thanks guys. I have to admit though that the black paint hides a lot. I have done a lot of touch work over the years. Otherwise, the bike has held up well. It doesn't get ridden as much as it used to since my bike collection has grown but I still take out it every few weeks.

Looks like hookless rims, careful, don't overinflate the tires....... I had that problem - tire popped off the rim as the tube exploded just sitting in the apartment.

I've owned quite a few Shogun's over the years, but I'll check to see about the rims. Never had a problem before with Araya, but you never know!
