carpal tunnel release surgery
open procedure not arthroscopic
anyone have it done? good? bad?
Wifey is getting it done next week. same hand as which she broke her wrist crashing into a bike trail bollard. probably not relate to fall, but since getting her cast off she's bee having shooting pains & went for some elaborate tests which came back with her having to get this surgery

Mine was open. My EMG results showed a pretty severe condition existed and was told that it was good that I hadn't waited much longer. Took 2+ years for current 90-95% resolution.

I have 'moderate' CTS. My hands always got numb while riding, and eventually they'd stay numb until the end of the ride 25 miles later. I had a release done on my left hand in January along with thumb arthroscopy. No pain at all this Summer from my left hand; same old numbness on my right. CTS on my right hand is scheduled for 12/11/18. I ride 1000 miles/year..

Yup, both hands, both open. Easy peasy.
Pre-surgery, it was so bad that I couldn’t articulate my fingers enough when I woke up in the mornings to turn off an alarm clock or put on my glasses. Took 2 or 3 minutes of shaking them out just to get enough dexterity to do simple things like that.
Woke up the morning after 1st surgey with a usable, pain-free, non-numb hand for the first time in probably close to ten years. Had the other hand done 3 months later.
Then, morning after, I wrapped it well, put on a wrist guard, and rode 60 miles on a road bike. Do not try this at home! No ill effects, but in hindsight maybe a bit too much of a dumba$$ move - glad I didn’t crash and land on it.
Anyway, the pain/annoyance level is less than a root canal, IMHO -really glad I did it. Well worth it.

at myself. Many women at the hand center I went to had carpal tunnel and they were in serious pain, everyone I talk to said it is not fun and having the surgery brought them relief. Hopefully everything will go well for her.

De nada ... hope she does well. Let us know her opinion of the surgery after it's done. I've talked to a number of other people who have had carpal tunnel (not necessarily the open method), and almost everyone says the same thing I felt after getting the first one done ... why did I wait so long? I bet she will feel the same way.

Had both done in 1992, at the same time. Kind of a pain to have both hands out of commission, but made it through. Zero issues since then. Wife had one hand done later and she has no issues either.

procedure went well. very quick 15 minutes in the ER. I barely had time for a blueberry muffin & coffee. she got anxious so they gave her extra meds. slept most of the day. pain/discomfort is minor. alarm went off at 3:30 am but glad we were 1st in line today despite the 1st snow storm of the season. so far so good I guess

I had a right endoscopic carpal tunnel release a few months ago, just had the left one done 1 week ago. Back at work (surgeon) the next day, no pain meds needed for either operation needed, reasonably good grip strength immediately post op. In both cases I was back on my bike right away. I would never have it done open.

Right hand done yesterday. Norco 'script, but I was fine with ibuprofen. Strangely, my wrist is a little more sore today, but still no significant pain.
Done at a surgeon-owned surgery center. Twilight sleep and local anesthetic, an hour from being rolled into OR to arriving at recovery room. Left 75 minutes later.
