Sort of Tombayed today.
Yup..... I did a slow speed tombay like spill today.
I was coming off a mup onto a street, and while I was paying attention to the traffic, I failed to notice the buildup of sand I was about to try to turn right though. I lost the front in the sand, and got clipped out, but it was on the way down.
So I rashed the inside of my knee, my opposite side arm (???), and my pedal. Uurrgghh.
Oh, and did I mention my hurt pride? At least at pushing 60, I walked away from an unplanned get off.

CLUB TOMBAY --- it is my understanding that to become a FULL FLEDGED MEMBER one must already be STOPPED and then proceed to perform a SLOW MOTION FALL because of the failure to detach from one's bicycle pedals. Club Tombay application.
On the noble steel. Didn't even make it out our short driveway. I always clip in after I hit the street. Except this time, I accidentally clipped in my left foot. Out of the shadows to the right comes a black car. I stop. I reach the point of no return when I realize the spot I put myself into. However, just before I hit I get my left foot out of the clip and protect my handlebars.
It gets better. The black car was my neighbor's car, about to pull into their driveway. Walking up the street was another neighbor - a pediatrician. She runs up the street asking if I'm OK. Yeah, uninjured, just 50 shades of red.

Tombay, derived from tomber, French for “to fall”. Otherwise known as captain clip (going down with the ship) or entering into a horizontal track-stand. I think either Digital Gee or some soul who has died came up with the term and had cool little certificates awarded to those who admitted to failure to unclip in time.

My favorite was the time I was riding my old Holdsworth Special, with Clément silk tubulars, back in in 1982 or so. I had come to a light and had run over suspicious stuff so I was wiping off my rear tire with my right hand. Unfortunately, the tire caught my hand and chunked it solidly in between the wheel and the seat tube. As I struggled to get my hand free, the bike slowly, slowly fell over.

I joined when I fell in the middle of the street during a long ride. I was lazy, and thought traffic was going to clear, so I didn't clip out until it was too late. That one was witnessed - about two others, I think, happened in the driveway. Club Tombay is a long-standing tradition here.

First day trying out Look Delta's and was stopped at a long cargo train. Had trouble clipping in as the arm raised, then got parallel to the tracks and hit my brake, ha. Laid on the ground like a turtle, still clipped in, with bike in the air. About 20 cars waiting on both sides lit it up like I just got married...tombayed sounds about right.

Here in SW FL, and I believe in Texas also, following the gymnastically artistic movements resulting in being on the ground on one's back while still clipped in with the bike's wheels pointing towards the sky as being the human version of ARMADILLO ROAD KILL.

I joined the club toward the end of my first week with clipless in Freduary. Stopped on the grass median of the MUP between the paved and gravel trails, waiting for a jogger and slower cyclist to pass. Forgot I was clipped in, lost momentum, bloop! Perfect no-mo tombay, in the grass.
Minor bruise on my thigh from the top tube. Otherwise painless since I've finally reached the age where I've done every possible stupid thing at least once in public and have been inoculated against most communicable embarrassments.
However since being hit by a car in May, breaking one shoulder and dislocating both, now I'm unclipping extra early and dragging my left foot just above the ground in hopes that if I do fall it'll be on the less injured of the two busted flippers.

Another reason to use platform pedals, especially at my age. The 1 or2 % gain in efficiancy while climbing isn't worth it.

Yup. I'm pretty sure it was the Deege.
FWIW, I don't expect to tombay ever again because I've found the solution. It's called a recumbent tricycle.

I came very close to discovering the proper method of tombaying on platform pedals. It involves an untied shoelace and a hungry chain.
And they said it couldn't be done!

Our ride leader Tombay-ed on Sunday. We had waited up for him and his (10-y.o.) daughter before an intersection. He passed us, pulled up to the stop sign, and promptly fell over. Perfectly executed. I was in awe.
