How do I Decode a Vintage Takara Serial # Made By Kuwahara
Anyone have a guess as to how to read this Frame serial # ?
It belongs to a vintage Takara 1970's - 1980's (poss) - HS3683_ _ (last 2 #'s withheld)
One Bike Shop I called said they thought the last 5 Digits were the bike's
Personal ID # ?
Anyone ?
Just got it out of Denver. .
I'm also trying to Locate My 1973 or 1974 Takara Men's 10 (or) 12 Speed (Sorry, I can't remember which, I had 2 bad accidents),
either a Professional or a Medallion, 27 " I believe, (long Legged),
Fire Engine Red with Shimano Derailer, Racing Pedals with Foot holds, was Purchased by Me in Sun Valley, Summer 1973 or 1974 Brand New Mint,
Stolen from Me by "Family" in Colorado, Pikes Peak Region. .
Still Looking because this Takara has so much sentimental meaning to me, 44 years + counting
This Bike was still Alive in Colorado Springs less than 10 years ago. .
If anyone has this Bike, No Questions Asked, I know who took it, YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE AND I WILL GIVE YOU $100 FOR IT'S SAFE RETURN,
Please Contact Lisa seven 1 nine two three 1 six zero nine zero
Thank You + I'll be rebuilding this one
Guy said it was Mint, Like New

This is not a Kuwahara serial number format. Takara had their models contracted manufactured by various sources. This format has been seen on Takara models and indicates Japanese manufacture during August of a year ending in 3. Takara did not debut until the 1974 model year and most early models were manufactured by Kuwahara, so it is likely 1983. However, it was also produced late enough int he year that it could be a 1984 model. To confirm the decade you should link to pictures or post the brands and models of some major components, such as derailleurs, crankset and brakes.

My 1983 Highlander had a serial number that started with the letters "JS". The first number was "3" and based on mine being a mountain bike and the component codes, I'm certain the "3" signified 1983, so I think T-Mar is right on the money.
Going back thru my posts on my Takara, I see that I mentioned finding some Bianchi's with the same serial number format, although I never verified a shared manufacturer for the two brands.
