Nice!
I love the ad with Ralph Sampson -all 7'04" of him- next to what appears to be a 56-60cm road bike. The top tube only comes up to just above his knees.

Interesting! I have a copy of a similar article from a Dutch magazine from the same era on some of the leading Dutch frame builders at that time (Ko Zieleman, Jan Legrand, Wim Bustraan, Peter Serier and Jan de Reus). Quite a difference! No fancy lugs here, it was all about racing.

The American market for custom steel racing frames/bikes had pretty much dried up after the mid 80’s. After that I made frames for bicycle enthusiasts that wanted a better fit that looked nice. I had 2 main goals when I went to England to learn how to build frames in 1975. The primary one was to learn the secrets to bring back to teach here in the States. I was a high school trained in how to share knowledge. The craft had pretty much died out when our bike boom started around 1970. My second goal was to make frames look as good as possible with shaped lugs and nice paint. That could be with plain spearpoint lugs finely shaped and thinned or carving a blank lug. Of course when selecting a frame to present to the public, a fancy lugged model attracts more attention whether or not that is what a customer was looking for.

I was fortunate that my teacher Jack Briggs at Ellis Briggs Cycles had blank lugs left over from the early 50’s that he gave me.Over the years I’ve improved methods on how to more effectively design and carve blank lugs. This information I’ve been able to pass along to my framebuilding class students. I imported blank lugs from the Nikko company in Japan for them to shape to make their own frame. .

A Reader's Compliment for Doug Fattic

And 5 months later in the Readers' Letters section of the December 1985 issue, there was this compliment for @Doug Fattic and the frame he built for this satisfied customer:
