One of these days I may need to track down a skid lid that I can hang up in my workshop. I actually used one of those once . . . . It is really hot in New Orleans which is where I grew up and I figured it was better than nothing. Now I'm not so sure, a cycling cap probably gives you better protection since at least it provides some protection from the sun . . .

Their explanation for why an Open Top was good wasn't clear to me.
Wouldn't spread of impact forces dissipate the energy from the point of impact?
Or was it meant to protect against the same type of injury that MIPS is designed to prevent?
If I recall correctly, I think CPSC/ANSI/SNELL standards were the downfall of Skid-Lid.

I think the selling point is that it was better than nothing and cooler than a Bell biker.

Probably, but since I prefer uncool and safe, I was an early adopter of the Bell Biker.

Thanks for posting this blast from the past!
that Klein was pricy for it’s day!!!!!
$2,300 for an AL frameset would be about $6,500 in today’s dollars.
$2,300 would be pretty steep for an AL frame even now.
I remember wanting a skid lid back then.... So much cooler than my Bell Biker.

I remember drooling over a few Klein frames in an LBS window back then, but I was priced out of that product.
I think I saw the Skid-Lid on people in magazines (e.g. Scott Molina) much more than I did in real life in the Midwest.

Pay $4 for the Klein catalog due to high printing costs and receive .02% off your purchase! Heck of an incentive.

If it’s no trouble, I am working on improving my cross country skiing technique so page 33 is of interest. It’s cool that you do this. Thanks!

The KLEIN Stage is one of the featured bikes in the Special Road Test article.
That article shows the Huret DuoPar Titane as the RD.
It's not clear to me that's the same RD in the ad though it's the same model bike.

Here you go. I guess it's not too large to attach directly.

"Breakaway" straps on the Skid-Lid, to let the helmet separate from one's head?!.....
What the heck were they thinking??
When did cyclist have that much problems with helmet straps getting snagged on anything during rides anyway?
