Shimano Ultegra Triple FD question

I normally spend my time in Classic and Vintage, but this question is not vintage enough for them.

Can you successfully substitute an Ultegra FD-6603 (10 speed) for an Ultegra FD-6503 (9 speed)? It seems there are plenty of 10 speed FD's around and way too few 9 speeds, especially in braze on. There is some difference in cage design, though I can't compare them side by side.

Thanks in advance for any help you might provide.

I would've answered for ya in C&V although you'd probably get some of them grouch's panties in a bunch.

It will work. You might get a little more rub than usual when you crosschain, but many have people done it including myself.

It works, but not nearly as well as it could. The difference is in the inner cage depth. The cage on the new version is lower, anticipating a 39t chainring, so in order to not have that inner cage run into the taller 42 that you still likely have, you have to raise the entire derailleur up out of its optimal height. Changing to a 39t will solve the issue.
