Surly Big Dummy
Posted this in the utility section but seems to get far less traffic
I'm pretty well decided I'm getting a cargo bike. Mostly for kid hauling school drop offs etc. I have also decided that the big dummy is my bike. The only thing stopping me is that the current model, dark side of the maroon seems pretty dated. I'd like to see through axles for example, the hubs that are speced are a a previous generation deore. Should I hold off and wait for a new model, hard to stomach spending 2k on an outdated bike? I know surly doesn't do model years every year so im kinda stuck.

Surly just went to a form of through axles on the trucker. So maybe there is hope, but don't think I would hold my breath waiting for it to happen.
Seems like you would get a lot more bike for a lot less money with a Yuba Mundo Lux cargo bike. Kickstand, fenders, 48 spoke rear wheel, dyno front hub with lights, hydro brakes, steering stabilizer. Plus 8 speed chains are considerably cheaper than 10 speed chains
But you probably know all that.

I have looked at the Yuba actually. It doesn't come with a deck or bags like the surly. But the surly dosent come with fenders. I think after buying accessories it would all shake out about even. Maybe the surly being a bit more but not as much as it looks. Also not that it should be the most important thing but I like the look of the surly more. I was looking into the bike friday haul a day too but landed in the surly. I had a cross check for 12 years and it served me without fail.

Phew, Surly's website doesn't highlight the fact the Big Dummy comes with the racks and bags. That seems like something they should make obvious.
Surly makes a good bike, no doubt, but the Yuba sure has a lot more than just fenders.
I couldn't imagine riding a cargo bike. They weight as much as my ebike without the benefit of a motor.
Love the picture on the surly web site of the bike moving a still

That sounds like the right call. I'm not sure that thru-axles would bring much of an advantage, and the big dummy is proven tech at this point. Enjoy the new ride!

Well ... I wasn't looking for a cargo bike, but I was looking for a bike to put a motor on. IMO that means longer than usual wheelbase, room under the fenders for big rubber (> 2") and steel, or steel fork. I wouldn't put my new Mongoose Envoy up against a Big Dummy, but I would (and did) compare it with the Yuba Mundo and I was ordering the Envoy before the page fully loaded. About the only thing the Goose doesn't have is a sweet, integrated 'Bread Basket' front rack. The one I found is frame mounted though and can carry a lot more weight. TL;DR: if you need the Dummy, you need the Dummy. But if the Mundo could do for you ... run, don't walk to the Amazon website and order the Envoy. You will save enough money to buy a motor! A much better motor than the electric Mundo comes with. And when you see the price of the Mundo with motor!!! It's really a no brainer.

that's pretty neat. I'm planning on modding a MTB into a similar configuration,
