Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What company or companies do you consider to be the big dawgs maybe not the best. RC cola tastes great to me. But who is the international Big Dawgs of cycling world.....the company that charges a premium for it's stuff and gets it...but maybe not the best??? Any thoughts?

Well, I was wrong, it's not Giant. Trek/Fisher by a mile, then Giant and Specialized.

Interesting that Raleigh's 2 points ahead of C'Dale.

I was thinking the same thing. Strange considering the survey involves bike shops.

Is this road only or all bikes? That could explain the oddities. Redline? Haro? Also names on the graph may not be same as names on the bikes. But OP's question seems to me to involve more than just volume. There is the perennial fight for consumer loyalty, the heavy handed marketing tactics, the vicious defense of trademarks (ya know the required disclaimers: "I'm sorry we don't have Coke, only Pepsi." There is a lot more to being like Coke and Pepsi, than just being number 1 and 2. Also is this world or only USA or NA? Wouldn't Giant be #1 in the world?

It's the U.S. market (National Bicycle Dealers Association). I don't know how you get to worldwide numbers, but I suppose they're out there.

The reason I first said Giant is because Giant builds bikes for lots of other brands, but that's also true of other manufacturers, so I guess you just have to go by brand rather than manufacturer.

Based on brand prominence and number I see (in the road bike arena) I'd call it Trek and Spesh.

Throw in the bikes that Giant makes for others, and the numbers would get closer.

Trek and Specialized.

Not to say they don't make quality stuff. I enjoy some of Specialized's products. I do not enjoy Coke or Pepsi, or any soda pop for that matter.

I would say Giant and Trek, if we ignore the fact that Giant manufactures much of Trek's stuff. But if just on manufacturing volume, I would guess Giant and Merida.

Agreed.
Pepsi & Coke been notorious for trying to maintain a cooperative duopoly by strong-arming retailers to prevent competitors products from having equal status in the marketplace. I've only heard of Trek & Specialized doing this.

That would be the local observation here as well, followed by SuperCycle & CCM from Canadian Tire.
Giant would top the list for "Brand Name" bikes.

Spesh way out-sells Trek and Giant in my area. By a margin of at least 3-1.
