Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

IME Jersey and Delaware beaches are an acquired taste...if they are a taste at all.

Drove through some of it and arrived safely back in hilly Chester County.

Jackie (the cat) was very happy to see us.

While it poured at times in my 'hood, we didn't get the strong winds. Strange because I heard on the news that trees were down on Kelly, MLK and Lincoln Drives, and two people who live in Chestnut Hill said ti was really bad there. The brunt must have skirted by area.

My ex told me that a couple of times, while I was away on tours that had me riding home, that my now-departed cat would sit at the top of the stairs and stare down at the door on the day I was scheduled to return.

TONS of retirees down in Delaware. I think I know one big reason...

The house we stayed in was a fine house, not too fancy, but roughly 2200 square feet and 4BR, I looked up the property taxes and they are $1000/year.

Our house in PA is similar and our taxes are about 6K/year. Same house in NJ near NYC will have easily 15K/year in taxes.

Delaware also has zero sales tax.

Hmm....I would consider moving there eventually, but lack of hills is a deal breaker.

A few weeks ago I got home from work on Friday night and immediately left to go on a quick overnight bikecamping trip to a nearby lake, mainly to test out some new gear.

My wife told me that the dogs were beside themselves all night, constantly looking out the windows looking for me. They're fine if I leave all day for work, but if I come home and then leave again they can't handle it.

The cats also seem to be clingy when I've been gone for a while, but they are not as overt about it as the dogs.

Broke my heart. The long term plan is to take the dogs with me on the bike -- the smaller one will ride in a front basket mounted to a rack, the bigger one will ride in a trailer.

Long term plan though. I have to train the bigger one to ride in a trailer because she's afraid of everything.

My departed boy came to recognize my panniers and would sulk when I packed them because he knew I was gong away. My current cat does the same. Went to Montana and Idaho for two weeks in June. He got bummed out when I was packing things.

They do that to my wife. They pull the old "sit in the carry on bag so she can't pack" maneuver.

I love our cats but I have Dog Energy. My wife has Cat Energy and she is their Queen.

Speaking of N+1, there's a rescue kitten at our vet's office that will need a home soon. It's not like we need a 5th animal in the house but since when has that ever mattered? I think we're in real danger here.

LOL that's my wife just don't want to be wantonly posting pics of her.

I know right? That's how they get you, being all small and cute like that before they turn into lazy fat ingrates!

I usually drink drip coffee at home and at work. Tastes great (to me) black.

But today, I came to work a little late and no one made a pot....so to economize I made a single serving K-cup of coffee instead.

I don't know if I did it wrong, but this stuff tastes vile. So bitter! Anyone else have a similar experience?

There are some hills in Delaware. Northwest part of the state, near the PA border, IIRC.

As for no sales tax, it still gives me pause when a clerk rings something up and tells me the final price is whatever is marked on the tag. I have an aunt and uncle who live off U.S. 202, less than 2 miles north of the state line. They always shop in DE for things like beer and wine.

Doc, you must have done it wrong. There’s usually a cup size selection button somewhere . . . hidden so as to make life miserable.

So how does that state survive financially? Income tax must be a *****.

I actually don't mind k-cup coffee. Especially, down at the bike shop because I don't have to pay for it.

Nope. Personal taxes are mid-pack and there's no state sales tax. No state corporate taxes on anything, as I understand it, and loosey-goosey corporation laws. Disproportionate number of financial firms and the like are incorporated there.

See datlas' post above. The taxes on the place where he stayed are not high. My guess is through corporate tax revenue. I believe it's a corporate tax friendly state rate-wise and possibly in other ways. That's why so many businesses are incorporated there. Shore-related tourism probably brings in a decent chunk of change relative to the state's size and population.

As MoAlpha said, they do have state income taxes but not bad. Lots of companies headquartered in Wilmington must help. There is a list of "States with lowest tax burden" and the only one near us is Delaware.

Getting back to pups, mine is 4 months old now and quite the handful as we struggle with the house training. Calling her names doesn’t seem to faze her one bit.

Wait a second, $6k a year on taxes for owning a house? Add maintenance and stuff and I think that I might as well rent forever.

I guess I should figure all of this someday. Meh, maybe in a few years.
