Show Your Suntour

I found a couple threads limited to Superbe / Superbe Pro, but nothing open to all that is Suntour.

Post 'em if you got 'em.

Is this the most long overdue thread or what?

Not quite built yet, and only a minimum amount of Suntour, but the bike will get the barcons (as well proper SunTour cable stops)...

And a New Winner in the rear...

I have and have had a lot of Suntour parts not put on bikes. Two of the more memorable parts:

NJS 16t track cog, black oxide finish

Suntour Roller Cam mounts for framebuilders. A bag of these were in the package with my roller cam XC Sport brakes, along with an instruction manual for framebuilders on how to space the mounts during brazing/welding to achieve optimal performance.

SunTour Command Accushift 8 speed indexed paddle shifter.

SunTour XC Pro Short Cage Accushift rear derailleur, mated to a SunTour Superbe Pro hub with an AP 8 speed 12-26 custom 1st gen cassette. Shifting is quick and positive with distinct, hard clicks.

@masi61 Fantastic parts there. I'd like to see a full pic of that Cdale.

Notice the MicroDrive logo on your short cage XC Pro derailleur. Not many mountain derailleurs came with such a short cage, but this guy was meant to be used with MicroDrive triple cranks with smaller chainrings and gear block than standard, so a short cage RD would be appropriate.

Thanks!
I had the CAAD3 Cannondale R1000 stashed away for 10 years after I bought it new around 1999.

I had the wheels built with an XC 9000 front hub and a Superbe Pro 8 speed cassette rear hub. The crank is Dura Ace 7410 with Willow triplizer. The derailleurs front and rear and shifters are SunTour.

I can/t seem to upload a photo right now. I’ll try again shortly.

1971 Suntour GT

Suntour GT rear derailleur on my all original (except for tires saddle, tape) 1971 Hetchins Italia.

A local NorCal woman was living in the UK and had Hetchins build this bike for her. Back then about the only choice in a long arm RD was the Campy Gran Turismo and the Suntour GT.

The story I was told was that Alf Hetchins hated the Campy Gran Turismo RD so he used the "lighter weight" Suntour GT RDs instead.

It shifts surprisingly well for such a boat anchor.

I've got old school Campy, modern Shimano, even some Simplex, but I love my Suntour. It's cheap, easily available, reliable and versatile. I even like the looks of most of it. The Cyclone II front derailleur is one of the most elegant looking of them all, even if the cheaply done logo rubs off. Maybe because they are so beautiful, that people keep polishing them.😎

My first build, a '73 Super Course, with GT Luxe RD, Cyclone II FD, shifted by Suntour Barcons. Shimano Megarange 34t and Sugino AT triple all play well together.

Love my barcons!

Nearly the same set-up on my '78 Super Course, except with a Sakae SR Apex double crank. Nice Suntour dropouts too.

Swap meet finds, GT Luxe and Cyclone II

Straight stays? Can't be a Hetchins, can it? It IS beautiful.

The Campagnolo GT wasn't even useful as a paperweight, much less a derailleur or boat anchor.

Suntour XC Sport triple pulley that came on my 1982 Miyata 1000. With downtube shifters they work all right, but with barcons perform very well. I would love to use it for a weekend tourer, but don't want to wear it out due to the rarity of it.

Mostly XC

Suntour XC that came on my '84 Cannondale SM600. I changed the original XC Beartraps for reasons I can't quite remember. Still have a Suntour chainstay protector! The front Derailleur is reverse-action. I remember there being a discussion on these a while ago; I love how it works.
